Actually, it's done better by Pablo Casals.

-has the Cello Suites on CD as done by Casals-

define "classical"

actually with the exceptions of most of disco, synth jazz and the souless crap being foisted on us by the latest "it" singers, I love all music.

further back then a century ago I like Sea Chanties, Folk songs, Orchestral, opratic, blues. ragtime and trubadour. (other things as well)

this tends to confuse me, as many people only consider the works of 18th, 19th & 20th century Orchestral/Operatic musicians to be "classical", when there is quite a bit of music proceeding that they are ignoring....

Though that is true, "classical" music (as the normal person would know it) usually involves music that is or emulates the music of the classical/baroque/etc. eras.

I do! I bought a nice big boxset from HMV not long ago too with all the greats on. I love film scores and general orchestral works enough to feel the classics are where it all came from.

Yeah, all the above are funky, but Tchaikovsky is damn good... especially "Dance of the Knights". Ah, yes, I can oppress to that music. :)

Some people speak in layman's terms. ;P And yes, I as well am a fan of the baroque era. I take after my old orchestra teacher so much, lol.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

As a general rule, no. I actively dislike any opera. Does that make me a bad person?

No. I don't normally like vocal music either. -shrugs-

Oh, good. There are so many other things that make me a bad person and I do hate to overdo things.

I'm a fan, hard not to be when your college has a con. I'm mostly about the orchestral stuff, full usually. But I like some nice romantic strings.
Vocal...well they know where they can take their aural skills.

I love classical music. It's nearly exclusively what I listen to.
Soontir C'boath wrote:I do...when it doesn't put me to sleep. :P I need powerful stuff to keep my attention, such as war themes.~Jason
My recommendations for you:

1812 Overture, Ride of the Valkyries, and Beethoven's 5th (duh).
The fourth movement of Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 ("New World" Symphony).
The second movement of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 ("Pathetique").
Finale from Rossini's William Tell Overture.
Chopin's Etude No. 12 in C minor, Op. 10 ("Revolutionary" Etude).
Rachmaninoff's Prelude No. 5, Op. 23 in G Minor.
Rachmaninoff's Prelude No. 2, Op. 3 in C-Sharp Minor.
Wagner's Lohengrin Prelude to Act 3.
Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) Sailor's Chorus.
Wagner's Tannhäuser Entry of the Guests.
phongn wrote:I love Holst's The Planets, but it is difficult to find a good recording of it -- mine certainly isn't too good.
Look for the CD with Lorin Maazel conductiong the French National Orchestra. That's the best recording I've heard yet. Here's a pic of the CD case if you want to buy it in a store:

Ok. I think it's time to make people go and impulsive buy CD's... so here we go. The first few are my personal favourites, and below them a bit of a "Mind opening as to what an orchestra can do"

Personal Favs:

John Adams, Harmonilehre

Phillip Glass, Violin Concerto

Mahler, Symphony 3

Olivier Messiaen, Turangulila Symphonie
(a word about this one, If you are new to the music of Olivier Messiaen, the music on these CDs is likely to sound completely different from anything you have ever heard. Messiaen's 10-movement work is a grab bag of musical themes from throughout the composer's career; you'll find elements of birdsong, Eastern mysticism, a gorgeous "love theme," and serialism in this epic composition.)

Ralph Vaughan Williams Symphony 2

Armed with these CD's I think you may never see music the same again... or at least have new standards to what good music should sound like.

Edit:

Ah what the heck... some more!

Also, the 6th movement. Trust me, having played it.

[EDIT] I remember that sometimes it's the 6th, sometimes the 4th. In either case, I believe the movement is called "Furiant."

I can be really enjoying what I think will be an excellent piece of music, only to hear someone ruin it with their voice, which to me seems completely out of place with all of those well-played and finely-tuned instruments.

For similar reasons, I enjoy the older Joe Satriani music, since it is devoid of anyone's chortling voice...

Do orchestrated versions of video game music count? :)

Officially, it doesn't, but I've got an excellent CD with Final Fantasy music on it, and my wife and I enjoy listening to it when we're driving (by we, I mean she, since I avoid driving whenever possible)...

Six movements? Are there two movements I haven't heard of before, or is it simply the four movements broken up into six shorter movements?

You should also try listening to John Williams' orchestration of the Zelda theme. I don't have it, but I have heard it and must say that it was done very well.

More than likely. We played "Furiant" from Dvorak's 9th Symphony the year I was in Youth Orchestra in Albuquerque, and it was (on the viola part) labelled the 6th movement, and on other parts labeled the 4th movement (about an even distribution of bring called the 6th and the 4th).
