"You damn gaijin! Why do I ever trust you to do anything?" the boss growled.

Saitou Kenji was a low level criminal, just barely high enough to catch an occasional glimpse of a real Triad ninja. But he was still miles ahead of a runner like Gene. Gene's only real advantage was that he was considered beneath notice and was allowed to move more or less freely along the ranks. He might deliver reports to a Yakuza like Kenji, or he might be pressed to find a caterer for the Mongolian khan of the whole city. He was strictly city-level though, and had didn't move up too far.

The reason that the Triad was so lax with the concept of organizing into self-contained cells which knew nothing of eachother (a long-time staple of organized criminality) was because the Kzin had no interest in people who were willing to turn state witness. Their justice system didn't require them to find such people, and in cases where they needed inside intelligence it was easier to just summarily arrest someone near the top and ask him.

Kenji handed Gene a stack of papers, "Take this stuff to Razza Khan! Hurry, he's going to pissed and it's not my ass if you don't catch up!"

"Right, boss," Gene replied as he stuffed the papers into his well-worn imitation leather jacket. "What time do you want me back?"

"I don't care!" Kenji bellowed. "If you don't hurry, you won't be alive to be back here! But if you're lucky, maybe Khan will have something for you! Now get out of my sight!"

Gene took the hint and half ran, half tripped out the back door to where his jalopy was parked. After a couple tries, it fired up and the courier sped off to the other side of the city.

As Gene tore through the city, Ragle watched how he was driving. He was at least a competent driver, but not quite as good as he could be, the bounty hunter reflected as he tore through a stoplight, just barely missing another repulsorcar that was parked on a corner. Subtly, Ragle assisted Gene as they tore through the city; it was enough to shave a minute off here and there, but Gene was no race driver. Nor did Ragle want him to be. If the lowly courier suddenly gained a host of new skills, people would start getting suspicious.

The jalopy arrived at Razza Khan's place with bare minutes to spare.

Razza was an ancient man with a silly mustache, and he accepted the papers with nary a look at the man. Like some members of the Mongolian community which had survived from the old SKS, he spoke only broken Basic.

"You, I have job for you. Go to restaurant, down street, get me beef and bean-sprout platter. If is still hot I give you tip, now go!"

Inside the body running on autopilot, Ragle mentally shook his head. This was the life of a common criminal in the Triads. It would probably take weeks for him to get even the faintest lead.

----

"I lost track of him, it's as if he's hiding behind something. The trail is faint."

"Shall we bring it to the Triad Head?"

"No. If he needed to know, he would already be aware."

"He's sure to reenter soon. Keep an eye out."

"That's cruel of you to say..."

The agent clicked off his commlink and continued walking down the street. His eyes hid behind a black bandage. He navigated with the sureness of step and awareness of obstacles that could only come from very deep Tao training... he was a hunter and killer of men, and he had plucked out his eyes that he might sense the trails free of distractions.

ooc: turning it over to you... the hunter isn't going to find you any time soon unless you do something drastic. But neither are you going to get ahead with Gene Wayne's job description. :)

1. Lord Calcite was reading over reports from the front when a runner came in with a sealed bag, orange in color. He tapped his keyboard and went to various nonexistant sites, and discovered what today that bag meant. He thanked the runner and sent him off, and then went to a carefully-prepared room.

All around it, wards inscribed in every language known in the finest spirtually-prepared papers, stones and metals hung. Many of them faintly glowed with power. Other, more mundane technological methods prevented others from planting a bug in the room or listening in with powered sensors. The designers almost need not have bothered -- the facility was in one of the Crystal Palace's sub-basements and thus quite secure from scrying. But the Kingdom was paranoid, especially the nonexistant department that had it constructed.

The aged CNO then read the report.
Her Majesty's Hidden Directorate of the Secret Intelligence Service reports to our CNO.

Four days ago, a Kzinti-flagged passenger ship visited Enigma. It was not confirmed at the time, but we believe agents of the Triad were able to slip past security and customs, likely with their darker arts. At this point, they were next seen leaving the building housing the Zodiac.

One day ago, we felt Destiny and Life wrenched un-naturally from its flows. The ancient arts were used, yet no-one alive knows how to use them.

Today, the Zodiac have convened to replace Gemini. We believe that he is dead. With Mercury in retrograde, it appears he may have attempted to break the Oath, with predictable consequences. It is now our belief that the Triad has infiltrated and neutralized the Zodiac as a threat to Triad Organization.

The Hidden Directorate thus requests additional funding to increase surveillance on the Triad Organization both foreign and domestic.

In addition, predictions of the ouija board and the Eight Ball have moved into correspondance. In particular, the Board has responded with "K1," which we have interpreted as the initials "K. A." The Eight Ball has also favorably responded to our divinations and questions.
2. There were many secret orders in the Milky Way. The Hidden Directorate of Her Majesty's SIS was one of them. But they were not the oldest. That honor belonged to the Secret Order of St. Ignatius, a Jesuit order that reported directly to the Pope in the Vatican. Their abilities were legendary in the intelligence communities across the Galaxies (at least those who knew about them), and they cooperated with some of the other secret orders in some ways.

Fighting demonic beings was one of them. Someone in the Hidden Directorate was getting a "dark vibe" off the Triad (in other words, he probably rolled a pair of dice and checked the computer for the daily report) and sent word higher up. Someone there then consulted the stars for action over many days (in other words, he flipped a coin and then took a short vacation) before deciding to contact the Vatican (meaning that he took a dartboard to decide who to contact in what order).

And so, an anonymous agent of the Hidden Directorate travelled to the Vatican -- still it's own nation, technically, though under the protection of the Terrans -- to meet with the Secret Order about what level of cooperation should be achieved.

OOC: Hehe. Yup, this is going to take a while...

As Gene tore off in the jalopy toward the nearby restaurant, Ragle was deep in thought. He had momentarily felt through the Force what seemed like faint tendrils, feelers if you will, trying to find him... So somebody was already suspicious. If he had the capacity to do so, he would have shrugged; he was used to people being suspicious around him.

Still, after much thought Johan decided that his best bet would be to simply lay low and watch Gene's life play out for a month or two. Running around the city had its advantages in that it allowed him to discover who the local crime bosses were, and once he had enough information he'd decide where to go from there.

His thoughts refocused, and he realized that Gene had already picked up the the beef platter and was headed back. He was also aware that Gene had skipped breakfast and his stomach was beginning to growl; the smell of the beef was making his mouth salivate. No good, Ragle thought, promptly overriding the reaction before Gene realized it. He was starting to wish he could sigh. Another month of this drudgery...

PRC space, near the border closest to the Azegart Empire:

Preperations were nearly complete. All that remained was a final rendezvous with the remainder of the fleet. The Emperor would return. And he would return in less than a day.

Note: this is happening concurrently with Thirdfain's invasion of Brisbane.

[Rendevous Point]

The last segment of the fleet had arrived. The survivors and the new aqcuisitions were all here.

"All ships, in the name of the Emperor we go to reclaim our worlds."

The massed fleet jumped.

* * *

[Azegart Space]

The Imperial Fleet burst into the system. Immediate action was taken; a call went out to the loyal population and all the rebel cells crept out of hiding.

"This is His Divine Majesty's Navy, we reclaim these worlds in the name of the Emperor. Surrender and you will be treated mercifully."

Daidoji Free Mercenary Fleet Ship Rekai's Arrow:

"Why are we going along with these crazy bastards?"

"Orders. And apparently we're getting paid rather well for this, though not by them."

The Rekai's Arrow and the rest of the Daidoji Free Mercenary Fleet, jumped with the Azegart Emperor's Fleet.

[OOC] The fleet consists of 6 cruisers along with 12 destroyers and another 20 frigates. The types vary and are rather non-standard, as befitting their owners. They are rather well trained, and veterans of numerous small battles with single system powers.[/OOC]

With the apparent failure of the attack on the Black Alliance, two of the three fleets there are withdrawn back to Patriarchal space and are standing down for repair and refit.

Commonwealth HRM Alpha hung over Desjardins. the Dreadnoughts Kali and Sif, along with seven Adrastea-class armored cruisers, six Orphne light missile cruisers, and over 50 escorts, sat in formation with them. HRM Alpha was tasked with the jumpgates leading the Azegart Empire.

The distress call came through the gate via tightbeam- massed enemy forces were assaulting the provisional Imperial capital at Ulrich. Three squadrons (3 large escort carriers, 12 medium cruisers, 20 destroyers and 50 escorts) of the new Imperial Navy were on-station, along with a sextet of Commonwealth-built orbital gun platforms, each mounting a battleship's broadship of cannon and missile tubes. Word from the ground had Provisional forces holding the capital and the main shield generators, though they were heavily engaged and in need of assistance.

HRM Alpha flooded through the Jumpgate to Ulrich, their approach guarded by Ulrich's orbiting gun platforms.

"This is Emperor Kraus. I stand strong with my allies against your rampant aggression. The people of the new Azegart Empire will not bow before fossils such as yourself!"

The Azegart forces deployed to the system were far heavier than the Pretender's force. They out weighed them in every respect.

Of course the first target of the force had been the jumpgates, those were hopelessly ruined by massed missle strikes on the effectively unprotected structures. After that the fighters from four heavy heavy carriers moved in for the kill on the enemy carriers.

The battle line in the mean time simply waited for the enemy to come to them.

-ooc- what sort of numbers are we talking, here? I'd assume that you are working largely with second-hand vessels, with a few Azegart Imperial Navy survivor ships.

Oh, and your fleet would have been detected incoming by the system's early warning sensors. Remember, Ulrich has a Commonwealth-built defensive net. There was sufficient time for the Commonwealth reinforcements to arrive. -/ooc-

The Commonwealth warships formed up and began to pour volleys of missiles towards the enemy formation. Escorts formed up around the four Provisional carriers, each of which dispatched it's payload- swarms of Succubus interceptors, potent defensive fighter craft.

The joint forces took a defensive stance. The Imperials would have to come for them, and time was on the side of the Provisional Government- it would be hours before additional reinforcements could arrive from across the Azegart Empire and the Commonwealth- less, if any of the dozen jumpgate linkages between the Commonwealth and the Empire remained unsevered.

Avalon Prime, Stuart Plaza

"War, again?" Gladstone sighed. "Can't they just learn to do it without it?"
"It seems not, your Grace," Miller resonded via Datasphere.
"We will go to Omega-Red, without exception. The war will not spread here..."
She was interrupted by an emergency call from the Azegart space. They seemed to be back again.
Miller and she shortly talked about it, and microseconds later commands were sent to the few remaining forces in the Aregath system. The remaining personnel were taking Personal Gates to return via GAte ships to Avalon, after the evacuation. the Gate ships themselves started to jump back to Stuartian space.
After every living Stuartian left the system, all remaining equipment disintegrated itself.
The explosions of the ground-based installations took several kilometers of surrounding countryside with them, leaving nothing but smoking craters.
The Orbital forts and remaining energy mines in orbit opened fire upon the planet itself, melting the upper crust before they themselves disintegrated into nothingness.
The explosion of the floating orbital base in the orbit of the gas giant could be, if anyone would have been left capable of doing so, oberserved from the inner planets.

***

At the same time, Gladstone's avatar dived into the deepest recesses of the Datasphere, to a place where she has been only months before.
"Omega-Omega imminent. Prepare. Excecute," she simply spoke before leaving.
Mechanisms older than anyone knew were set into motion...

HM Government finds the position of the Stuart Corporation most distressing in this time of galactic turmoil. In particular, the Stuart Corporation has signalled their de facto support of organized piracy with the closure of their borders and the protestation of the Entente Cordiale's invasion of the former Black Alliance.

HM Government requests a period of one week to withdraw her shipping from the Stuart Corporation's private territorial holdings. If the Corporation fires upon any ship flagged by the Star Kingdom before she has been given adequate time to leave, there will be serious consequences.

We are unaware of any "private territorial holdings" of yours outside the approved Orbital Station, from where ships should be easily able to leave our space.
Your ships are free to leave unharmed, and if registered, may stay in the designated zones for foreign craft.

Should you choose to remove your presence from Orbital Station and are unable to do so with your current shipping, we are willing to offer you adequate freighter space from us.

Survivors and sort of second hand acquisitions. It's all listed in the OOC thread.

They might have, but at the speed hyperdrive operates it isn't going to be much more than a few seconds.

The fighters off the four carriers bore in and began fairing their loads at the three enemy carriers. They out numbered the enemy and had been well trained. With near suicidal dedication they began unloading their ordinance on one carrier until it was a burning wreck, then moving on to the next. They paid a heavy price but they got through.

As the enemy carriers were struck and slowly overwhelmed, the battle line watched. They knew time was short enough and they had to move before the reinforcements arrived. From the flagship came the orders to advance.

"All ships, engage the enemy. Hypermissles first, then close to energy range."

The Commonwealth STL volley launched a few bare moments before the hypermissile strike arrived.

Even as the projectiles were heading for their targets, hits registered along the hypershields of the wall of battle. The multifreuency shielding stopped many of the missiles, but not all. Three frigates and two destroyers broke up under the volley, and one of the Adrasteas shook as she took a hit amidships. Her thickly armored and reinforced frame shook, but she did not come apart. Another of the large Cruisers took a hit to her aft. One of her large banks of generators died in a brilliant flash.

The Commonwealth vessels timed their own hypermissile counterfire to match the arrival of their STL barrage on target. Hits registered across the enemy fleet as the manipule's six Orphne-class missile cruisers flushed their rotary tubes. 1200 of the big hypermissiles favored by the Commonwealth arrived concurrently with the swarm of STL missiles.

It would be almost ten minutes until the light cruisers would be able to reload their cumbersome rotary tubes, but the short-term throw weight the rotary set-up provided would ensure heavy casualties among the enemy on the initial barrage. The rest of the fleet continued sustained fire from their conventional tubes, wave after wave of smaller STL ECM and bomb-pumped laser warheads mixed with hypermissile salvos.

One of the Provisional carriers was down, and another was seriously damaged and venting atmosphere, but their fighters had already launched. The Azegart squadrons had fought with ferocity, but their concentration on the carriers had left them open to the guns of the interceptor swarms and the fleet's escorts. The Azegart squadrons would not be making another sortie of nearly that effectiveness.

Perhaps the Stuart Corporation is unable to read: the "private territorial holdings," was a direct reference to your holdings, not that of the Star Kingdom's.

In the depths of the Deep Core, where stars lay but lighthours apart, the Corsair fleet gathered. It would be safe here for a few days, tops.. Then it would be moving again. But it did allow a moment for everyone to enjoy the view, count heads, and gather materials for the slow repair work.

Aboard Andrew's flagship, the Mind that had been recovered with the Unrelenting Scourge had been hooked up. It seemed rather pointless to imprison it still, and the human had to admit it might be a useful helper.

It was, in fact, mostly only good at complaining so far.

"Of all the utterly useless ships to be stuck in, this is the worst." The Mind stated through it's audio transmittors. "You can't transmute, you can't hypercompress, you can't even create the alloys needed for an Orbital! How did this bunch of primitives ever take me as a prisoner?" Lamented the digital god.

"I see the expense and difficulty of connecting you to our systems is so appreciated." Andrews spoke, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Oh, fine, if you want to call these primitive knockoffs 'systems', go right ahead. We might as well start calling an abacus a supercomputer, hadn't we? Oh, and you've got the Affront. Oh jolly good. I bet at least they can do more than Deuterium fusion for power!"

"If you have better, please, do something instead of whining. We're all stuffed up now; we have examples of superior power generation but our research into duplicating them is lost." Andrews snapped. "If you want to be so high and mighty, why don't you take a crack at repairing your own ship?"

The Mind stayed silent for a full second, thinking. "Well, you'll need to find a Grid Tap, or learn to make them. They're not hard, you can apply Fields to create one if you're careful. If you're not, you get what's called Gridfire. Total pants for combat, but a pretty impressive way to kill a defenseless position. I suppose I'll have to teach your children everything..."

"Your patience is most welcomed.." Andrews sighed, wondering how many decades it would take for the Corsair Republic to catch up with the Galaxy's power generation, with or without this crotchety old computer.

Outside, the stolen shipyards of the Aquarians moved and worked.

1)
From: Department of State United Terran Republic
To: Stuart Corportation

The United Terran Republic is sending this message to add it's support to the protests of it's ally the Star Kingdom of Serenity regarding the new policies of the Stuart Corporation. If entente vessels are harmed or molested we will fully support any response by the agrived entente members.

2)
From: Office of the President, United Terran Republic
To: Senate of the Commonwealth, Three Suns Commonwealth

Citizens and Senators of the Commonwealth. You voted to reject a fair and equitable solution to the problem of the chaos regions. You have chosen to support war, chaos and anarchy over peace, order and civilization. No matter what grand sounding words you use to cloak your activities we and the galaxy at large are now aware of where your true motives lie, simple territorial expansion. We hereby warn you that any further attempts at territorial expansion in the chaos sectors will be meet with firm resistance by our nation.

Vatican City Earth
Brother Adams sat in his small office in the vaticans deepest sub basement and considered the request from the Hidden Directorate. To most members of teh church he was only a simple monk, only the pope and a few other knew that he was teh leader of the Secret Order. The part of the church dedicated to the eradication of demonic acticity the order had icnredible arcane kowledge and pwoers at it's diposal but rarely used them. This report from the Directorate was very worrisome and he saw no reason not to work them for the good of mankind.

Deep Space. A Space Station.

He was known only as the "Advisor." No one knew where he had come from, only that he was old, he had been around before the Atlanteans came and probably longer then that but msot records from that time were now gone.

He had abhored direct action for the last three hundred years, he'd learned from his earlier mistakes. He was the richest man in the galaxy but his anme showed up on no lists of the galaxys richest people. In fact five of the galaxys ten richest people were no more then his pawns. He had contacts throughout the galaxy and influence with powerful people. But most of them had never seen his face or even heard his voice.

He had a handful of aides who worked for him but known of them knew him any better. He was the definition fo a mystery. No magic or psionics had ever affected him and some of those aides had been present when he fought a Kzin barehanded six years ago and killed it with three quick strikes without receiving a single mark in return. His only comment had been, "Nothing compared to a Boyd Knight."

It appears, Nitram, that you have forgotten something...

1. The Deep Core was an excellent hiding spot for those on the run. The mass of stars and black holes made it difficult for most powers to get any sort of coherent sensor reading, and thus the remnants of the Black Alliance hid. But they had forgotten that the Deep Core was once the province of the Star Kingdom, and while they had retreated, they always kept an eye out on the Core.

It was unfortunate that one ship made made the hyperspace transition too close to a star, eliciting a sympathic reaction that resonated at tachyonic speed before a small receiver detected it. That automated listening post instantly transmitted back to its masters at the Local Observation Centre, from there the warning was dispatched to the Regional, then Sector Operation Centre. The refugees had only been there for perhaps two and a half days when their own alert sirens went off, their muddled sensors detecting a spacefold transition approaching.

They ran, of course. Standing and fighting would mean that Kzinti reinforcements would soon arrive, and they would be crushed between the hammer and the anvil.

"You tried hiding in the Core, didn't you? I thought better of that from you," said Nguyen. "We used to own the Deep Core, and you seriously expected that we wouldn't monitor it? By that rather rough hyperspace transition, I assumed you barely made it out."

Andrews was in no mood for his prisoner's admonishments, so he simply continued walking down the hall to his own operations centre. Nguyen watched him go, guessing what was on his mind. Crossing wits with the Mind of the Culture? Bad idea. But Andrews doesn't know what I know ... or does he? Ah, the tangled webs of deceit..

2. Two utterly anonymous men acted as proxies for powers much greater than themselves. They dined in an outdoor cafe in Rome near the long-restored Colleseum. One had to be careful of what they said, but any pickup would be swamped by the sheer number of people in the area. The impromptu football game in the streets, clogging traffic -- but Rome's traffic was infamously horrid anyways -- and distracting their tails.

The man from the Secret Order spoke in Latin; the man from the Hidden Directorate spoke in the long-dead tongue of the Moon Kingdom. Both languages were long-dead, and at any rate they would blend into the background. "It is agreed, then?"

"Yes. We shall assist you on the archeological digs on the Moon as well as against this...Triad. Your agents on the Five Fangs and Engima will be contacted."

"Excellent. The intelligence information we offered will be available through the usual methods. The diplomatic bag; I'm sure your agents in New York can retrieve it without difficulty."

Above them, two Papal Ninjas silently watched, their nano-clothing effortlessly hiding them from the world. Ninja, indeed, many from Nagasaki, but they were mostly trained in the Western arts as opposed to the traditional ones from the land of the Rising Sun. Indeed, they carried European-style swords and the inscriptions were in Latin, not Hiragana. Their wards below had done a decent job of evasion; but the Papal Ninjas were much better -- and neither the Hidden Directorate or the Secret Order knew about them. They were agents of the Pope, and His Holiness had taken especial interest in this mission.

3. "The Advisor is active again, Minako."

"Him? I thought that those people had enough with the galaxy and left."

"Not him ... he hid himself remarkably well. SIS only confirmed that he was still in the area eight years ago. Information is scarce, we know little about him. What we do know is from Meiou."

"Meaning we know nothing of substance." Minako smiled. Pluto rarely gave useful information these. Something about keeping time intact, as usual.

"How are the rest of the Planetary Senshi coming along?"

"They're doing well-enough, they don't need me anymore. A mission, I assume?"

"Yes. Keep your primary mission, but get more information on this Advisor. Figure out if his friends are heading back here, or if he's just acting alone."
