They are quite right. Buildings take years to build there. My previous home is a six story building that took 5 years to build. The point about incomplete buildings is also correct. I have seen buildings that suddenly add a new story or two after a few years.MKSheppard wrote:Freerepublic is very cool at times:
The odd thing about its unfinished appearance is that, in the Arab world, many many buildings have that unfinished look. And for a reason. An unfinished structure is not subject to taxes. As long as it is officially "under construction," real estate taxes are not levied. So if you want to build a 2-story home, you build it with rebar sticking out the top, as if you intend to build a third story. You then claim that you actually intend to build that third story. Result - no real-estate taxes due until you finish the house.
Further, in the Arab world, many don't trust banks and instead put any windfalls into home construction. Homes may be constructed over a period of a great many years. You come into some money - you put it in the unfinished and unoccupied house. Eventually, you'll finish it and it's your retirement. They do the same with office and apartment buildings. They can top-out a building's structure - and then the thing just sits, sometimes for many years, until they get the funds to move forward. There is seemingly no time limit on building permits.
This design looks like something an Arab would conjure up.
However these usualy apply to private homeowners. Real estate developers work fast like the ones in the west.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
I don't know...looks like an incomplete picket fence to me.salm wrote:i like this design by richard meier. white, shiny towers, shapes without fancy shmanzy, weird angles while still being something completely new, a fairily simple shape which is easy to remember (so you´ll think of it first when you hear "new york")

And, I'm not one to judge scale, but it looks kinda like two twin towers placed in a line with some bars poking through them.
And white towers? Yeah, that's gonna last in NYC... I'm willing to bet they'll be gray-ish in less than a year, unless you devote a lot of time to cleaning.

Pfah. None of this New Age Crystal Crap should be outside my window. A single, mile-high (damn the impossibilities and cists!) black obelisk. One-way windows that appear black when viewed from the inside. And creepy music.

BTW the Mile High Illinois is a mile high to the top working floor. That does not include the height of the Spire! Frank Lloyd Wright did not beleive that fluff like a Spire should count in the height of a building. 328 floors was the inicial design. It never got past that but Wright had worked out how to build this massive structure after a Chicagoan proposed building a mile high TV antenna to ensure that everyone could receive his TV signal. Wright said, why not build a building if you are going to build something that big? From what I have read it was possible to build this structure with 50's technology and it is really a massive pyramid rather than a simple box.

IIRC, the biggest thing that kept it from becoming a reality was that the elevators would have been too slow to get around the building.Isolder74 wrote:BTW the Mile High Illinois is a mile high to the top working floor. I mean, heck, there was a company in Tokyo who came up with the idea to put a five-mile building overlooking Tokyo Bay.

A company also came up with the idea of the Freedom Ship. That doesn't mean either idea is feasable.

Frank Lloyd Wright did a lot of architectural wanking.
His Falling Waters was falling into the war until shitloads of rebar were shoved in there.
I'd rather have Mike on the case of constructin' than him.,

Stumbled uppon this thread today at the urging of Isolder74 to respond well here goes.
It is easyer to vision and achieve a building a mile tall today then in the 50s when the real Frank Lloyd Wright presented the idea.
the challenge of the elevators for such a structure are already being thought out in concepts for buildings that are not a mile tall.
The Otis Elevator company is developing elevator systems that are fast and can operate with multiple lift cars in a single shaft and still allow express service to the top floors. The elevators use Linear Inuction drive systems and are also able to travel horizontaly by not being cumbered by cables. Look them up ( http://www.otis.com/worldwide/1,1719,,00.html )
Yes build The Mile High New York and see the view from my office window.
Not only would you be able to see the entier New York Megapolis but you could live and work in the building itself. With one building like this we could more than replace the office space lost in the WTC and create new living space at the same time and not even encroach on the WTC memorial grounds of the entier footprints of the two buildings and the ground around where they fell. Imagine making the whole colapse site the Memorial park with only a part of the site needed for the Mile High building to stand on.
This post has been long and I must go on now.

I personally don't particularly mind the design too much. It's going to be damn near impossible to cool during the day, though, and where the heck are the bathrooms going to be?
In all seriousness, though, I still think that the best design would simply to rebuild the towers. I don't think that would leave any room for further comment.

The only problem with just rebuilding the towers is that it leaves the mess in the original Manhattan street grid... better to fix the street grid first, then select a design that doesn't conflict with it.
