Trumpets, violas, basses...that's all well and good, but the fact remains that there is one and only one total power trip as far as an orchestra goes, and that is simply the conductor. Period.
I believe in the Holy Trinity: Bach the Father, Beethoven the Son and Brahms the Holy Ghost.

I liked ONE PARTICULAR MOVEMENT.. with bias, mind you.

Other nice additions to the list:

Sibelius - Finlandia
Prokofiev - Peter and the Wolf
Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake
Sibelius - Finlandia
Schubert - Ave Maria
Salieri - Contredanse

By the way, hell if you ever find it, but Richard Meyer's Bailes Para Orquesta is also a very sweet piece, very festive.

It's a biased statement. :P I generally tend to like music more when I've played it. ;)

Also, there's a very pretty minuet for violin and piano, but that, as well, is overused.

Then there's a minuet (?) for viola da gamba, but I can't remember who it is by. :banghead: That was my favorite solo and ensemble piece - ever! [was also a solo for All-State the year I made it in]

Violin and viola. I dislike the violin, though, so I stick with the viola. (That, and the violin is too small for my hands)

From highest to lowest:

Violin: E, A, D, G
Viola/Cello: A, D, G, C
Bass: G, D, A, E

Octaves:

Violin/Viola: 3 or 4?
Cello: 4 or 5 I think
Bass: At least 5, IIRC

What I mean is chromatically, so are there, what, 36 - 48 semitones from nut to bottom of neck? Also, are more than 4 string violins available? I found out that the 6 string basses keep the fourths going up and has a C instead of B string, so they go B, E, A, D, G, C

Basses change strings in 4ths, rather than 5ths.

And you said octaves... so I gave you octaves, as far as I can remember. :|

36-60 semitones *I think* depending on the instrument, though I may be overestimating on the bass..

wow, ok. The standard guitar only has 24, but I guess that makes up for it because we have an extra two strings.

Well, this isn't counting harmonics. That'll up it another octave. But yes, I've done three octaves on a single string before (24 whole-steps; several more including the half-steps).

Besides, on a guitar, you have frets; on string instruments you do not, and often times find your fingers touching or overlapping the firther you get down the fingerboard.

It seems they don't make the CD anymore. :? I've tried looking all over the place for it, but no site has it. See if you can get results. CDC 7 47022 2 by EMI Records. Riccardo Muti conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra. Bolero, Les Preludes, and the 1812 Overture. Maybe you can find it on amazon or ebay?

(Snorts.) Tell that to a concert pianist.

While I'm making this post, I'll list some more pieces. :P

Liszt:
Mephisto Waltz
Norma Fantasy
La Campanella
Etude Concert No. 3 (Un Sospiro)
Venice and Naples
Wilde Jagd
Rigoletto Paraphrase
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (duh)
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 11
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 19
Basically all of his Hungarian Rhapsodies, but those are the two I can remember that stand out from the rest.

Rachmaninoff:
Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor Op. 19 Adante

Mendelssohn:
War March of the Priests (I prefer the organ version.)

Bach:
Tocata y Fugue (Again, I prefer the organ version.)

Sinding:
Rustle of Spring

Schubert:
Moment Musical No. 3 in F Minor
Spinning Song Op. 67 No. 34 (This one will brighten your day. :P )

I believe iclassics.com should cover all of this. Go here to search for the pieces: http://www.iclassics.com/iclassics/artists_search.jsp

Yes, a violinist/oboist/flutist/hornist/etc can take the orchestra where they want.. Seen it done far too often to think otherwise.

Pianists just have an advantage of not usually being able to see the conductor.

Even if he or she could see the conductor, who cares? The conductor has to follow him or her either way.
