I'm with Bob Brown on that. The idea that the lightsabre is somehow something magical or ultra-arcane that engineers and scientists couldn't deal with it is dumb.

Its a piece of technology, nothing more, nothing less.
Really?
Read I,Jedi you'll see the force plays a large part in the construction of a lightsabre.

Read NJO:Conquest where Anakin's blade couldn't even activate until he'd foind peace with himself and the force.
That' even more dumb. The lightsaber is simply a piece of technology. Everyone who writes different, is not to be taken serious in that matter.
And if you want canon evidence:
-Han Solo was very able to use Lukes lightsaber in TESB, and he is clearly not strong in the Force.

Centerpoint Station:

As for the lightsabers, given the fact, that there were "only" tenthousand Jediknights i highly doubt, that there are enough Inquisitors and DarkSide-Adepts (especially if the later ones are hiding on Byss) to justify Obi-Wan´s claim of "still in wide-spread use in some parts of the galaxy".

Weren´t the lightsabers used by the students of the Shadow-Academy in YJK factory-made? That would be at least one thing KJA got right.

I seem to recall in a book I got as a gift a few years ago had mentioned that these new Dark Jedi had their lightsabers mass-produced. I just checked it and the book's name is Young Jedi Knights: Jedi Under Siege, by KJA and Rebecca Moesta. Page 43, last paragraph:
His squad of Dark Jedi checked their weapons, scores of identical lightsabers manufactured aboard the Shadow Academy.
Yeah, a children's book, but what do my parents know when buying me a Star Wars book?

EDIT: Just saw FTeik's post. Yeah, that's the book I suppose.

That's at most a handfull of sabre users. Ben said they were still widely used in some places. Besides how likly is it that he while hiding out on Tatooine would even know about the Emperor secret cache of darksiders.

Its still official, and besides we see the same thing in Dark Empire 2. Lukes travels to an Abandoned Jedi Training Planet. Where here discovers hundreds of lightsabers in storage. Mind you that these weapons were not from Jedi fallen battle, the planet was abandoned, due to the events in Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords Sith. Which indicates that they were mass produced.

Which just shows how poorly trained or deluded they both were. In the ROTJ radio drama and novel, Luke builds his new sabre following....an instruction manual. He only uses the Force to calm himself, so he doesn't align the crystal wrong. He doesn't energize the sabre with the force, he doesn't rearange the molecules of the crystal to get it to work, he just uses it to calm himself. Neither the fact that Corran used the force to build his saber, or the fact that Anakin believed he needed to use the force to activate his saber proves that you or I could not build one given the correct parts and instructions.

By the way in TESB Han activates and used Lukes saber with no problem what so ever. Maybe Anakins saber had an internal activation switch, and he need to use to force for that reason; sabre equiped that way are not impossible.

Several have, including myself. I am well aware of what the calcs are, which is why I question the "high megajoule" output based on those calcs (at best, you might get 400 MW or so, but the calcs tended more towards 200-300 MW. And while it is a lower limit, we are constrtained mostly by limitations in materials.)

The impression i got from "I, Jedi" when Corran made his lightsabre was that although a non-jedi could make a LS, use of the Force was needed to perfect the construction and make sure it didn't conk out when used.

Also (Treading on thin ice here) in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (The game) Jaden makes a LS with no training at all.

it also mentions in the D20 books that use of the force is required to properly align the crystals or something similar to that effect.

Qwi-Gon clearly had a malfuntioning lightsaber, as it clearly says in the EU that lightsabers produce no heat when properly made.

In Darksaber(as much as all of you hate KJA) Calista used a lightsaber against Daala at the end in the Knight Hammer ready room. She had lost her powers and was still able to use a lightsaber, granted she did not do all that well but that was because Daala fired the stun.

Yes, and that's why Vader's saber cauterized Luke's Hand.

Well, canon supercedes EU...so it needs a better and more consistent explaination.

I think it might be that the EU refers to radiant heat and the movie examples show direct conduction. This makes even more sense when added to material that says that a lightsaber looses no energy (excluding its relatively unimportant glow) except when it hits something.

They don't radiate heat. A microwave doesn't radiate heat either, but their cutting effects do definitely generate heat in the matter being cut.

Plus, the ~100 MJ number comes from the energy released to melt the blast door in TPM.

The construction of a lightsaber involves special crystals that are only found on a planet named Ilum. Anakin's journey there is chronicled in the awful book Jedi Quest, by Jude Watson.

That could easily explain the rarity of lightsabers. It's probable that only Jedi know of this planet; even Obi-Wan didn't know about it until Qui-Gon told him.

No they don't. Sith and Luke Skywalker in SoTE use artificially made crystals.

So why do you say "high megajoule" range? 100-300 maybe is low to mid MJ range.

The blade itself doesn't radiate heat, but it does clearly possess energy (how do you think it cuts through things) so it can heat things up by transferring that energy to objects (like when Qui-Gon sticks his lightsaber into the door - energy is transferred from the saber blade into the surrounding metal, melting it.) Likewise, the blade will only "lose" energy when it is in contact with something substantial enough to transfer energy to (an enemy body, a blast door, etc.)

Again, its not so much a requirement as a "tradition". Sources like the AOTC VD indicate most Jedi typically construct their lightsaber from "natural" crystals, but it is not a requirement. The use of synthetic crystals is probably heavily discouraged by the Jedi order due to the fact that synthetic crystals are typically used in the construction of Sith lightsabers (For Example, Dooku replaces the "natural" crystals in his lightsaber with synthetic Sith ones when he becomes Sidious' apprentice.)

100-300 megajoules per second is pretty high. Any higher and you could call it low gigajoule range (over several seconds, you would get gigajoules of heat). 1-10 MW would be low to mid MJ range.

Technically speaking, from a thermodynamics viewpoint, heat is a process, not an object. Lightsabres heat things. It is impossible to "radiate heat". Microwaves heat radiatively. So do lasers, even though a laser beam has no "temperature" of its own.
