Woman loses *ALL* of her skin, survives

2 things:

that is one hell of a team of doctors that saved her life

what the fuck is up with that antibiotic that caused the reaction in the first place? With a side effect of 'Maybe all of your skin will fall off and you will die' how did it get FDA certified?

Allergic reactions are the number one thing that slips by in the testing phase.

My wife worked for the Ottawa Hospital ethics board for a number of years (the group that decides is human testing is okay or not). While I haven't been privvy to it, she told me that they have a huge file of returns and requests for testing based on patients suffering allergic reactions that testing didn't discover the first time around.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

SAN DIEGO -- A young Ocean Beach woman survived a severe allergic reaction that had University of California, San Diego Regional Burn Center staff scrambling to save her life, 10News reported.

By all accounts, Sarah Yeargain, (pictured, left), shouldn't be alive. But she is and some are calling it a medical miracle.

Three weeks ago, the skin on Yeargain's body began sloughing off.

Dr. Daniel Lozano, from the UCSD Regional Burn Center, said, "She lost skin in her entire body. It's rather dramatic to really see this coming off in sheets."

Even the membrane covering her internal organs -- her eyes, mouth, and throat -- began peeling away.

"Once the skin starts to slough, there's no stopping it," Lozano said.

Yeargain said she did not know what was going on with her body.

"The cause was a rare reaction to this drug, Bactrim. It is a common antibiotic used by millions of people," Lozano explained. "What she has is a condition called TENS -- toxic epidermal necloris -- which is an autoimmune reaction to a whole host of drugs."

Yeargain had just finished the 10-day course of Bactrim for a sinus infection when the allergic reaction began.

"I started to get some minor swelling and discoloration in my face and it progressed into blistering on lips and swelling on my eyes. It then progressed into blisters all over my face and chest and arms," Yeargain said.

Within two days, the skin on her entire body was peeling off. Doctors told Yeargain's mother, Katherine Yeargain, there was little hope for her.

"Generally with 100-percent sloughing there is a 100-percent mortality and he was optimistic. We just prayed," said Katherine Yeargain.

It was a race to save Yeargain.

Doctors covered Yeargain's entire body with an artificial skin called transcyte and gave her medications to stop the internal bleeding.

"We were able, over a 48-hour period, to cover her whole body with an artificial skin replacement that allowed this to start healing rapidly. Within about a week her skin was back," Lozano said.

"Everybody prayed and here she is," Katherine Yeargain said.

"I wasn't ready to be finished," Yeargain said.

Some, like veteran burn unit nurse Meredith Frank, called Yeargain's recovery a miracle.

"I think with the magnitude of the skin loss she had that there was a divine hand in her recovery," Frank said.

After good medicine and perhaps a miracle, Yeargain is prepared again for life.

"I'm ready to start healing and get back to it," Yeargain said.

Yeargain is home from the hospital, but she isn't about to forget the doctors and nurses who helped her survive impossible odds. She said she hopes her story will encourage people to donate money to the UCSD Burn Center.

I showed my Mum this article (she's a registered nurse, ex-military) and she has handled this antibiotic and said it isn't all that common, but it's not some new thing that the FDA or anyone hasn't approved of other than for testing.

This is an unfortunate, or rather, fortunate outcome given it didn't result in death. A one off, but scary nontheless.

Those doctors and nurses certainly deserve some sort of special recognition for this.

I wonder how Mrs. Yeargain is going to cope with this... Still, I gather from the article that she won't be too disfigured.

The reason I haven't clicked on this link until now was the thought of a picture associated with this story, I'm glad there wasn't one. But Jesus, can you imagine....

Probably because most people (95-99ish???) who taken the Bactrim aren't allregic to the antibotic and it is safe for them other then mild side affects.

Usually the first symtoms of allergic reactions start to happened during the period the drug or antibotic is taken not afterwards, unless I'm mistaken.

holy fucking shit. . . .i can't begin to imagine what it'd be like to have all of your skin suddenly start falling off like that. it's just freaky. though it really pisses me off to see the doctors' work dumbed down and attributed to a 'miracle from an invisible deity'. it kinda really belittles what they did.

When they say it and make minimal or no thanks to the surgical team that did the work then they become an honorary fundie in my book.

Its a common autoimmune reaction. People are different, some will have it in differing degrees.

I suppose the FDA should ban peanut oil because there are a tiny number of people who will die from ingesting any of it?

And about the anesthesia drugs used by my father daily to keep patients with open heart surgery unconscious and unfeeling--they're essentially nerve agents and could concievably a vial could kill thousands. That shit the Russians pumped into the theatre in Moscow is an order of magnitude or couple weaker than standard medication in the hospital that he uses.

If she's home her skin must've already regrown somehow.
