If you're talking about the 1982 version of the Thing vs. the 1953 version, 82 wins every time.

It will simply assimilate the 53 version by some means, and that will be that.

So the winner is...The Thing.

No, Ben Grimm from the Fantastic Four vs. John Carpenter's The Thing.

Oh. In that case, still JC's Thing. It would assimilate the form of someone he trusted (like Sue or Reed, or both) and grab him while he was asleep, sticking it's tentacles down his throat and assimilating him.

Off-Topic: Have you played that new Thing game out for PC and PS2 yet? It's pretty cool.

Ol Ben really just doesn't have the means to kill it. Sure he could mash it up into a fine red paste.. but that would likely just end up getting him infected, and remember each piece is a whole. Smashing into goo is just going to make the goo come after you (and it gives you more parts to try and track down).

What was it, three years or so for one Thing getting to the mainland being able to assimilate the whole planet?

Shit, which "The Thing" do I vote for when I pick the Carpenter version (1982)? I can't tell.

I believe in a sign of Zeta.

Although I am one of the Millions who idolize Mr. Grim I think that even
if his Aunt Petunia helped he'd still be taken over by The Thing (from another world). Even if his hide was too tough for him to be infected by
The Thing there are other parts of him that aren't (eyes).
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.
