...so I asked the clerk, and he was alarmed by us asking how to fly airplanes and said that was against the law...

If anything this really reflects badly on the retail chain Staples for hiring such pathetic morons in the first place who think it is illegal to learn how to fly. This is especially glaring since a quick trip to the Staples website show that they do indeed stock Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.

Actually, there's quite a bit, as some activities are 'disapproved' by the state and get you seperated from others. That, by definition, is a comparison. There's magnitudes of difference, but still, a comparison exists, especially if you get one of those new surrogate sense of humours.

While there is no comparasion in scale to Germany or Russia, the point is that since when did it become practice in America to have men in uniform go visiting a citizen (and an ex-pilot, no less) who asked a clerk about a computer flight simulator that the particular office supply store happens to stock? While America is not like the two aforementioned states, after all, the pilot isn't in prison, but that sort of paranoia which leads to police conducting an investigation of a person who didn't do anything illegal or even particularly unusual is the sort of paranoia you get with said states.

No normal person would go to Staples to buy a flight simulator. Thus, anyone who does must be a terrorist. The reasoning is quite simple; I don't see what everyone's getting so worked up about.
