Anti-Americanism causes polio to spread in Nigeria

Post by Joe »

Link
Muslim leaders in hundreds of northern Nigerian communities such as Batakaye limited or halted door-to-door polio immunization last year. They told millions of faithful in this Muslim-dominated region that the American government had tainted the vaccine with either infertility drugs or HIV, the virus that causes AIDS -- statements later proved false by independent laboratory tests.

Some leaders admitted in interviews late last year that they never believed such a thing. But they remained silent, they said, in order to stop anything associated with the United States. The US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, several said, had led them to believe that America wants to control the Islamic world, and the polio vaccination effort gave them an opportunity to resist a US-funded initiative.
Sickening.

This just shows how utterly stupid and irrelevent popular opinion can be beyond a "we don't want them blowing us up or rebelling" sense in the uneducated world.

Dumbasses- don't they realize that they are actually HELPING us in a sickening way by killing off their own populations?

As long as they're the ones doing it to themselves, they can point all the fingers they want at us and only accomplish making themselves look more and more stupid each time.

If there were only hurting themselves I would shrug and live on.
The problem is that they are sabotaging our efforts to eradicate polio.
Nowadays most countries donnot vaccine any longer due it being eradicated inside the borders and surrounding countries, and the existing protection is slowly breaking down. So when now polio will break out of it´s last reservoirs it will spread like wild fire and all the effort and the billlions of money invested will be wasted.
With every year we let polio peacefully exist the chance it will break out increase ( it actually did already happen, we just managed it to stop it ).
So they trying to obstruct our efforts is cynical and "menschenverachtend" ( contempting for human beings ?) to the Nth degree.

actually no. their leaders who are responsible for the halt probably all got a proper shot. by simply having a bunch of assholes hast said immunization, ´we´ don´t win shit. the only thing that happens is that the poorer population who can´t afford an immunization are going to lose somtehing. perhaps their life.

But Allah told them to do it. Surely he will grant them eternety in paridase for resisting the temptation of the infidel's tainted drugs.

Again, 'we win'. They are killing there own population., Leaders are useless without people to be lead.

Look at it this way. the people suffer. Fine. There choise to believe there leaders. Maybe this will wake the population up to realize there leaders are abusing them and do something about it.

And if they are two stupid to realise that, give them Darwin awards, they deserve them

We take the inoculations
If the outbreak occurs, we quarintine that area and forbid travel two and from
(i.e the SARS outbreak last year)

Lots of infected Chinese died under quarintine, but it only spread beyond that because someone was infected before the quarinte was put up, so they put Toronto under it too, and the outbreak was contained.

Same idea
Polo outbreak in islamic countries, the WHO puts the area under quarintine

1. The plural of "virus" is "viruses," not "virii."
2. If the disease spreads, there will be a lockdown to contain it while the rest of the world goes on a mass-immunization campaign the likes of which the world has not seen since the eradication of smallpox from the wild.

leaving lots of nice real estate
I wouldn't exactly call it nice real estate, unless you mean the natural resources  But anyway, remember when right after September 11, the US govt. went paranoid over the possibilities of smallpox? Think of what would happen if they figured a major polio outbreak.

I suspect that the illiterate masses who are controlled by the Muslim leaders will never hear the true reason why their children had to get polio, and that a lot of them will just stop getting immunizations, period.

I also suspect that those same leaders like keeping the masses illiterate, as it makes them ignorant, docile, and easy to control.

And that will cost a bomb and take time. Looking at the media hype about SARS, a dudden polio pandemic would be chaos.

Thankfully we can stop this, if it was something like HIV only lethal within days, I'd force the nations to have this vaccination.

Not surprising considering it is Nigeria, one of the most backward places on Earth.

You just described Ebola Zaire. Unfortunately, there is no vaccination that won't kill the patient just as surely as the disease. Its not airborne though. Likely the only thing that's kept it from staging a major outbreak.

Ebola Zaire is too damn lethal and tends to burn itself out easily enough.

Marburg, then. Its lethal, but not so much as Ebola. (There's also Ebola Sudan, which only has a 60% fatality rate as opposed to Zaire's 90%, but that's still probably too lethal.) But it is also borne in fluids, and hasn't broken out past those monkey workers in Marburg, Germany and the area around Kytum Cave in Kenya.

Marburg's nasty. But the bugs that kill in a matter of days and sicken you within a day or so aren't too big a threat since they're relatively hard to transmit.

Yeah. But he did ask for something as lethal as HIV that works in days. That ain't Marburg, although of the filoviruses (I think that's right) Marburg's the most likely to break out. Except for Ebola Reston, which for some reason is not lethal to humans. Its also the only airborne one. *Shrug* Go figure.

I read that part of the reason why Ebola decimates an entire village is that there's a custom that when someone dies, everyone who knew the person has to touch the corpse to prove that they had no part in it (because supposedly if they cast a spell on them, supposedly they can't touch the body). This applies especially to Ebola, since the victims die in such a gruesome manner. So everyone has to touch the bodies, and then they themselves get Ebola and die.

A few teachers were stoned to death by their fellow villages because they were accused of practicing witchcraft that caused killer diseases. The article didn't mention it, but could it be because they had read about how Ebola and other diseases are transmitted by fluids and refused to touch the bodies?

Is Ebola Reston the one that has been killing off the gorillas in the rainforests recently?

Possibly, thought more likely it's a variation of the orginal simian variety of Ebola. The only documented cases of Reston were in American monkey houses used for animal testing.

And I believe that hype aside, there's been question raised about Ebola Reston's potential for aerosol transmission.
