I totally agree with Maddox, Garfield does suck. I was just thinking that this morning. I don't understand how he could look it over, and actually find humor in it. :wtf:

Fairly ambigous about Garfield, some of them I like, some of them I don't, but Maddox, as I have mentioned elsewhere, rather gets my goat...

i just found out about Maddox two weeks ago, and added him to favorites for, i don't know what reason. i guess he's kind of funny, but even after just two weeks he's already gotten sort of repetitive and boring.

I like garfield, now does that mean he isn't funny sometimes? Yes. But if we were to take that rule the Simpsons would have to be cancelled to.

LoL!!! I was wondering when that one was coming Mont. A little slow on the reaction. I enjoy Garfield very much. I haven't read the comics in quite a while, but I still like it.

There being a live-action "Garfield" movie coming out made me lose the last clinging little shreads of respect I had for Davis, and made me recognize him for the souless merchandise whore he is.

Given he's a shameless money seeking merchant, and I have more respect for Scott Adams (Dilbert writer) then Davis, but I still like Garfield, and especially the early years.

The live-action Garfield movie hasn't changed my opinion of Davis--I mean, what opinion is there really to have of a cartoonist? But it certainly has made me disappointed in Bill Murray.

Damn, beat me to it!

When I was a little kid, I read Garfield before I discovered Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side. After that, the simple gags just couldn't compete, and after Watterson and Larson both ended their comics, I just couldn't go back to anything less. Heck, I bought several of the books for each, and they're still funny when I reread them; an old Calvin and Hobbes story I've read ten times can make me laugh a lot more than most of the strips that exist now.

Whatever happened to the idea that the funnies could also be smart?

Sorry, but I don't devote much energy to admiration of Watterson, Larson, Brethed, Adams, etc. I mean, they're cartoons. I can devote my energies to doing far more than caring about Davis' commercialism.

I dont complete agree with maddox on this. Garfield is funny despite what he says. Maybe the truth is he lost his sense of humour.

BTW any of you saw the animated Garfield cartoon ? It is funnier than the comic itself.

Funny you should mention Watterson. In one of the very few interviews he gave, he was asked to comment about Garfield. He said something along the lines of:

"Garfield? It is...uhhhh...consistent."

That sums my feelings up perfectly.

Yes, that is exactly what he said.

At least we can rest easy that Garfield has remained higher quality than that mass-produced shit Davis tries to pass off as a comic strip about a farm.

Well I checked out the Garfield teaser for the movie, and I have to say that it doesn't look horrible. Jennifer Love-Hewitt as Liz seems a fine choice, although I didn't get a good look at any other cast members. It seems a little weird to have a CG Garfield with a live-action Odie, but the effect wasn't too jarring. It could be funny, but I won't get my hopes up too much.

You mean Orsons farm ? It is a far cry from Garfield but is tolerable.

Barring some drastic change, Garfield has always been, and will continue to be one of my favorite comic strips. When the comics page is covered by crap like 'The Boondocks', 'Gil Thorp', and 'Doonesbury', which I think would be more at home on the editorials page or on a soap opera show, Garfield remains a surefire way to get a smile out of me. Garfield never gets bogged down by a political agenda or soap opera, but always remains lighthearted and funny. The TV show managed to mostly capture its essence, but just wasn't as good as the strip.

Although Garfield will always play 3rd fiddle to 'The Far Side' and 'Calvin and Hobbes' in my book, I still find it better than most other strips by leaps and bounds.

Calvin and Hobbes rules all. Especially the Spaceman Spiff ones, the one where he blew up his school in an F-15, the one where there were T-Rex F-14 pilots, etc.

I have nearly every book Watterson made. But Garfield is all right too. Most of the times I like Garfield better than Peanuts.

Watterson and Larson are still making books arent they? Calvin and Hobbes has to be my all-time favorite. Dillbert second, Far Side third.

As for Garfield, it's funny sometimes. A bit repetitive, but hardly warranting the blasting it got from that guy. Sounds personal. I wonder if someone sodomized him with a Garfield pez dispenser.

[Edit] And nothing gets funnier than Calvin's snowmen. I laugh just thinking about the one where he used his father's glasses.
