Weird Things Your Pets Do

Post by SylasGaunt »

Okay.. now I got the idea for this thread while watching one of my cats today. What sort of odd habits do your pets have?

My biggest cat, Smokey, doesn't drink from her waterbowl normally. Instead of lapping it up like most cats do she sits in front of it, paws it a couple times then licks the water off her paw. Now if she did this only a few times I wouldn't think anything of it.. but I haven't seen her drink water normally except from a faucet at all in the last few months.

She also gets the urge to climb EVERYTHING. If there's an object more than 2 ft. tall in any of the rooms here in the house she's climbed it at least once. This includes bookshelves, the entertainment center, the hutch on my mother's desk (she goes up there so much she's claimed one of the baskets on it as her personal bed), and once even an alcove up by the cieling (which is a good 10 feet off the ground.. and she did this with a standing jump from a box a good 3 or 4 feet from the wall and only around 6' tall) though I don't know how odd this can really be considered given all the 'cat caught in a tree' stories I've heard. Or maybe it is unusual since she's yet to get stuck on anything and not be able to get down.

Another odd habit of hers is that if you move any of the furniture in a room the entire room must be given a thorough sniffing.

Final odd habit is a weird game she and her sister play where they wrestle and whoever gets pinned ends up getting groomed by the one who did the pinning (wash, rinse, repeat until they get bored of it).

Lance's (our oldest cat, a male tabby around 14) only seemingly odd habits are his love of cheese and canteloupe and the fact he's a shameless beggar and attention-whore (that and he's got a purr you can hear from across the room)

Midnight isn't all that odd.. aside from the fact she's got a spot on the couch she sleeps on so much it's got an indent shaped like her in it now and the fact she's got hardly any attention-span (which is why I nicknamed her my little ADD kitty).

So.. what kind of odd things do your pets do?

i used to have a rottweiler that would lean up against your leg alot. and when you moved she'd simply fall over without realizing it.

I have a cat that always begs for food when we're eating dinner, and has jumped to the top of almost every high thing in the house. The other two I have don't do that.

I also have one that's really fat (About 18 pounds). Other than that, they're pretty normal cats: they're dumb, and hate my guts.

My wifes cat has like six toes on each of his front paws. One is small and pokes the last one out so it looks like he has thumbs.

My pet roaches like to try and attack me at my computer. Once they tried to stage a major uprising which was crushed by the mighty arms of ME. and the current edition of the Florida Times-Union.

And they had a colony in a drain. Set up when I was gone for a weekend. I poured Drano down it and no sign of them since.

Also, they come out within five minutes of my setting a dominoes pizza on the stove. Then they die.

They're awful swimmers, often drowning in the toilet.

and they are susceptible to chemical attack.

My cat has different tones for people.

Me: Just regular begging meows for food or lovin.

Girlfriends: pitiful meowing so they either thing I'm a monster and pet her.

Parents: demands...simple as that

One of my cats has very active dreams as when he sleeps he twitches and paws at stuff.
One of them headbutts people to show affection.

When i worked at the vets, one of the vets would bring his two cats (both male) in while he went on holidays and i once caught them humping.

Slobber collects on her chin sometimes, so she wipes her face on the carpet.

She sleeps on my dirty laundry even though she has a bed.

She gets my attention by simply staring at me.

When I'm asleep and she has to go potty, she whines, and when I get up to let her out, I find her with her forehead pressed on the back door.

Eat the carpet, shit/be sick on the carpet, attempt to kill each other.

Not pay attention to what i'm telling them to do, even though they know precisely what i'm saying.

Currently, disappearing is what my cat's done.

I have a dog that keeps getting itself off on either the bed or the floor. If the bed is accessable he'll definately mess it up.

Ooh! Ooh! I got one!

shes not my pet, but...

My friend found a cat squarshed on the road one day. car ran over it's head. She scooped it up and took it to the vet, who was going to put her down, but the vet was so taken by the fact that even though the cat was obviously in intense pain, it still purred and tried to rub the vet's hand. The vet then reprtedly performed emergency surgery to reconstruct the cat's head/face. the cat lived, albeit when it purrs, it sounds like a mack truck's "Jake Brake" and it drools like mad, leaving stank-assed cat slobber all over your pants' leg. and she is a VERY sweet cat, too. Pet her once and you have a friend for life with the nastiest breath you ever has the displeasure of horking. also, half her lower jaw is missing, so she drags the drool around like an inverse tail.

Of course...she may not be being sweet at all, but begging for the sweet embrace of death.

My cat sometimes sleeps sprawled out on her back with her legs and paws sticking out in all directions instead of being curled up like all the other cats I've ever observed.

When she sits down, she tucks all of her paws underneath her. Her fur is entirely black, so when she does it she looks like a large black blob with a head on top of it.

She opens doors that are slightly ajar.

If she wants someone to pet her, she'll walk up to you and push your hand up onto her head.

My dog (she's about knee-height) loves sneaking behind people who are standing somewhere (like talking on the phone or making dinner) and then she plants her front legs on the ground, swirls her entire body around that axis, and hits the back of your knees with her butt, tripping you down.

My cat has to be in my room if I'm not there. If I close it when I leave for work my roomate says the cat pounds on my door till he lets him end. the first couple of times it happened he thought somebody was trying to break in. The pounding was that loud!

When using the suround sound the cat will walk up and sit in front of the TV.

Cat will for run around like its on crack chasing something only it can see for 15 to 45 minutes at a time. Freaks me out sometimes...........

Also likes to set up ambushes for when my roomates miniture doberman comes walking by

My dogs learned how to open doors that aren't shut all the way by butting their heads against it. One day I shut my door all the way.....

The top two were dog things. Our cats are excessively affectionate.

I don't really think of this as "weird" so much as totally awesome, but:

Sadie (black lab) will take the elastic bands I use to tie my hair back and grab it with her teeth, then get one paw inside of it. She then shoots it across the room (I've seen her shoot it over fifteen feet from one end of the living room and down the hallway) and chases after it. She then shoots again.

Lucy (golden retreiver) invariably watches Sadie do this for a while (I have never seen Sadie fuck it up), then gives it a shot herself. She (again, invariably) manages to snap herself in the face with the rubber band every single time.
Never mistake temptation for oppurtunity.

my dog likes to sleep in my bed when I'm not, even though it has places to sleep.

aformentioned dog also will walk up to you and sit right next to you until you notice him and pet 'em... the record for him just sitting there was like 2 hours. If you get up without looking at him, he will follow you around until you sit back down again, then sit in the exact same spot.

Heh, mine open doors to. If you go to the bathroom in this house without shutting the door good the cats'll paw and push the door until it opens then come in to get petted. They can also get the closet doors open so they can go to sleep in the clothes hampers.
