Ouch. Stupid, stupid Hillary Clinton...
Did anyone see that speech Hillary Clinton gave with the Mahatma Ghandi gas station joke in it? Ouch. Ouch ouch ouch. She's going to feel that backlash for a while, eh?
But I like how on Conan, Mahatma Ghandi got even with her.
"Yes, yes, I work at a gas station. Oh my yes. But she like customers that come to gas station... she only get hose put in back hole if she pay! Oh snap!"

During one of her speeches recently, she made an off color joke about Mahatma Ghandi (who, yes, is dead) while quoting him. Something to the effect of "I'd like to quote Mahatma Ghandi, you know the guy who works in the gas station... alot wisdom comes from that gas station". You know, playing off the stereotype of Indians working in gas station quickie marts. My jaw dropped when I saw it. Appearantly, she's done nothing but apologize since, she she's getting that jackslapping over it.

You know, it's funny, when I first saw that I didn't make the connection with Indians and Gas Stations at all. I thought she was simply making a joke that the person she was quoting was nothing but a Gas Station worker, while everyone knew better. Kind of like saying: "I'd like to quote Thomas Jefferson. You know, the bus driver in New York right?"
You have to wonder why people get so worked up about this kind of thing. I doubt very much she, or any other politician, would openly try to be that racist, even if they themselves WERE racist. It just isn't good for a political carrer right? The fact that politicians have every word they say repeated and taken out of context makes it a pretty shitty job in my mind. After all, Al Gore still can't get over the whole "I invented the Internet" thing, and if you actually listen to that quote in context it made perfect sense!

"Pumping station? Isn't that what they called the Oval Office when your husband was in it? OH! SNAP SNAP!"
Anyway, it wasn't a very funny joke anyway

Actually, when I heard about it, there was, in fact a large outcry against her. She's been apologizing non-stop since then.KrauserKrauser wrote:Where is the public outcry?
Oh thats right the major news media isn't harping on it because they have a preference for democrats.
That's right kiddies, the media is biased.

When I see the same outrage and harping that took place when (Insert name of guy because I'm stupid) said good things about Stromm Thurman on his birthday being laid on Hillary, I will pipe down. Till then I call bias.

There are two ways of looking at this.
The first is that, quiter frankly, nobody really cares about Indians. Indians aren't as divisive, historically, as segregation was.
The second is that nobody ever took Hillary Clinton seriously, and they aren't going to start now

That's the thing. Alot of the people who've got the outrage over this don't actually care about Mahatma Ghandi, his life, or his struggle to fight the caste system of India and give Untouchables rights. They just want to see Clinton get hers, even though they probably don't know anything about Ghandi.Bob McDob wrote:There are two ways of looking at this.

For some reason wanting equality in reporting on the fuck ups of both sides doesn't sound like a bad thing.Gil Hamilton wrote:That's the thing. Like I said, though, nobody really seems to care about India. Hell, not even Republicans seem to be making a big fuss about it; if anything people seem to look at it as "one more thing to hate the Clintons for", does it even matter now?KrauserKrauser wrote:For some reason wanting equality in reporting on the fuck ups of both sides doesn't sound like a bad thing.
Now, on the other hand, if Clinton made a similar joke about, say, Mexicans, or Jews, or Blacks, then I'm sure the press would be all over her like the bacon between the sandwich.
And isn't Gandhi considered a perpetuator of the caste system among some Indian activists?

Me neither. I think it was just an extraordinarily poor choice of words on her speech writer's part.Joe wrote:Honestly, I didn't make the connection at all either until I read about it this morning.

Oh I guess you are forgetting the insults that Hillary made against the Jews when she was running for Senate. Oh that didn't get much coverage? Wonder why...Bob McDob wrote:Like I said, though, nobody really seems to care about India. How about all the press coverage that Al Gore got for his "I invented the Internet" statement during the election, yet Bush's Air Force desertion got almost none? Don't bullshit about the phantom left-wing media conspiracy that hard line Republicans are always yammering about. Here's a hint, it doesn't exist.KrauserKrauser wrote: Oh I guess you are forgetting the insults that Hillary made against the Jews when she was running for Senate. Oh that didn't get much coverage? Actually, I'm simply wondering why democrats get a free pass on racist cracks like that. If that had been say Trent Lott there would have been people calling for his head. The Kernel wrote:How about all the press coverage that Al Gore got for his "I invented the Internet" statement during the election, yet Bush's Air Force desertion got almost none? Come on Stormbringer, I'm about as anti-racist as they come, but I don't go on witchhunts against people that are obviously not racist. Do you really believe that Hillary was trying to make a racist joke here? I didn't even figure it out till I read about it in the news and aparently neither did several other people.Stormbringer wrote: Actually, I'm simply wondering why democrats get a free pass on racist cracks like that. If someone makes an intentional racist crack, I say grill them to the full extent of the barbacue, but if you know that it wasn't even meant that way in the first place, how can you come down on them about it? It is hard to imagine any politician making such a statement intentionally, even if they were racist (it doesn't exactly help a political carrer). If it had been a right-winger like Bush that had made this remark, I'd feel exactly the same way. People make mistakes and they can't always depend that their statements will always be taken the intended way.
