Anyone into film/TV scores?
I love movie music, and collecting it is right up there with book collecting. It absorbs an astonishing amount of my income. Anyone else out there collect?
Yeah, i'm always listening to film scores, though i havent been as up-to-date as i used to be.
Fav scores:
Conan the Barbarian
Star Wars
Gladiator
Braveheart
Interview with the Vampire
Alien 3
Recently Matrix Revolutions has been spinning in my player quite a bit; say what you will about the movie, but Don Davis created a masterpiece of a score (even if it quite bombastic in places--so is the film i guess).

It's a great feeling when you finally track down a soundtrack you've been looking for for a LONG time.
Some of the ones I managed to track down over the years:
The Last Unicorn, Excalibur
Some of the ones I'm always keeping an eye out for:
The Dark Crystal, Space: Above and Beyond, Angel Heart.

Stravo, you can find the Dark Crystal soundtrack at the Intrada website I think. I got it when it first came out as an official CD. It's a 2-disk set with the original score on disk one, and the extra unreleased stuff on disk 2. If you can't find it on Intrada, go to film score monthly's website and search it there. Also try moviemusic.com. Hope that helps.
Charben THANK YOU, I've been wanting to own that for the longest time.charben wrote:Stravo, you can find the Dark Crystal soundtrack at the Intrada website I think. Where'd you find it?

Ebay. Some guy was selling the German version. Even has the title card in German "Das Liezen Einhorn" Damn it brought back some good memories seeing it as a kid and loving that line of Prince Eric.Zaia wrote:I LOVE 'The Last Unicorn!'Stravo wrote:Some of the ones I managed to track down over the years:

"Damn you wizard! If magic and spells can't save her then what good is a wizard."
"No, that's what heroes are for."
"Yes, you're right, that's EXACTLY what heroes are for." ALWAYS sends a chill down my spine.

The Aliens SE soundtrack was GREAT! It added some music we never heard in the movie that was great but still wish the track playing when they armor up and pile into the APC was on it. One of my favorite cues in all the Alien movies, very militaristic with the drumbeats.DPDarkPrimus wrote:I wish there was a boxset of the Alien movie soundtracks...

while the anime itself was slightly cheesy, Iczelion had an excellent music score imo. it's a rare find and little known but the soundtrack is simply awesome. unfortunately the soundtrack itself is nigh imopssible to find. i have yet to see a CD available anywhere, and even on peer to peer networks mp3s are difficult to come across. (it took me months to find what little i have)
"It's you Americans. There's something about nipples you hate. If this were Germany, we'd be romping around naked on the stage here."
"The Princess Bride" soundtrack has one of the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful pieces of music ever written, called "I Will Never Love Again." Only about 3 seconds of it is played in the movie, which is a tragedy. It's so gorgeous...
Mark Knopfler is amazing.

There is a disk that was released a while back called Alien Trilogy which was a collection of all of the highlights from tghe first three films--good disk to have if you want a 'best of'.DPDarkPrimus wrote:I wish there was a boxset of the Alien movie soundtracks...
The Aliens SE is great to have, especially the unused bonus tracks (one of which was used in the ending of Die Hard, originally as part as the temp track, but found its way into the final film--the scene where Carl from Family Matters wigs out and kills the final baddie; the music change is actually jarring because Horners sound is so distinct). I find it to actually be one of Horners weaker scores--the music is great in the film though. On its own, its just a repetition of tracks from Star Trek II--Horner has a funny habit of making every single score of his sound exactly the same. The exceptions are perhaps Braveheart and Cocoon. Speaking of Cocoon, this is a wonderful and unusual Horner score--delightful little mandolins and acoustic guitars and some very moving tracks. Very underrated and melancholy score.
I think that Elliot Goldenthals score for Alien 3 is by far, not only the best of the bunch, but also one of the best scores of all time. Terrific, terrific stuff. I love all of Goldenthals work but he tends to repeat himself as well, though not nearly as much as Horner. Sphere and Frida are great underrated scores of his, and Interview with the Vampire is a fantastic, sad score, very classical in its sound (i guess reflecting the period-setting of the film).
I would just like to add to my list of all-time favs, perhaps the most bizarre, original and lovable scores i've ever heard, the score to the magnificantly underrated horror film Ravenous. You simply HAVE to hear this, its a great blend of post-modern and folk.
Plunkette and Maclean has a great, mostly-unheard score as well (an equally amusing and unheard-of film as well), though one track has been used in a lot of movie trailers.
I'll swallow your soul!
Zombie, I own Ravenous and it is WONDERFUL. It just doesn't sound like any film soundtrack I've ever heard, a weird blend of western and modern type beats and that ending track is so fucking haunting. When I saw the movie (which I also recommend) and that final track played I left my house and went right to buy it at my nearest music store.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Heh, some mates came around last night and whilst we watched a Tales From The Crypt late night movie, someone mentioned Dark Star and the scary monsters and my one of my flatmates had it on VHS along with Labyrinth. No Excalibur, sadly, but I need to see those films again.charben wrote:Stravo, you can find the Dark Crystal soundtrack at the Intrada website I think. Stravo,
You're most welcome. I know what it's like to search for a particular CD for years and not find it. When I found a CD of Star Trek III at a convention I just about shouted out loud with joy. I'd been looking for years for it. Thanks GNP Crescendo. Now if only they'd put out an expanded version of ST 2 & 3...
Oh well. I can dream.

Gladiator is one damned good score. Had a lot of fun playing that one. ![Cool 8)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)
On another note, no pun intended, I love movie scores, but can't think of any others that aren't already named..
