BirdS of Prey (as in the TV show)
Anyone else watch Birds of Prey last night?
Quite interesting. Mia Sara looks horrible with short blonde hair. Dina Meyer reminds me of Tracy Scoggins with her hair straight. The action reminds me a lot of Mutant X.
Overall, 6 out of 10.

If it remindes you of MutantX and you gave it a 6, then you are a very generous marker!

I saw it. It was pretty good.Kelly Antilles wrote:Anyone else watch Birds of Prey last night?

I agree that Mia Sara didn't look good with blonde hair.
I thought the action looked a lot better than Mutant X.

On the show they don't really say but it could be that New was tacked on after Gotham was reopened and rebuilt after No Man's Land, assuming that happened in the show's mythology.Galvatron wrote:Can someone tell me when Gotham City became New Gotham City? I assume it's supposed to be the same place.
Also, the Joker and Catwoman looked ridiculous during their mercifully brief snippets, as did Batman (to a lesser degree).
I agree with how the Joker, Catwoman & Batman looked. I'd also add that Dina Meyer looked good as Batgirl without the mask but the mask made her head look too big.
One thing I didn't like was the ocassional cougar scream in the background when Huntress was doing something. I hope they lose that part quickly.
Otherwise the show was cool and the women were hot.
By the way, I know the BOP comic has been around for awhile but I was thinking how, in a superficial way, BOP seems like Dark Angel.

Luckily the writing is better and the action is handled better too.

Yeah, that was major lame (espcially since they did it when she was sneaking around).Tsyroc wrote:Galvatron wrote: One thing I didn't like was the ocassional cougar scream in the background when Huntress was doing something. I hope they lose that part quickly.
The show reminded me alot of Batman Beyond with Batgirl taking the mans place as the old-timer superhero teaching the smark mouths younster how its done.
It also reminded me of Charmed (which my wife forces me to watch) especially the cop-in-the-know (who even looks like the same guy) and the way Pheobe's power works is almost exactly the same was the blond girl (Black Canary?).
I like it better than any of the other sci-fi-ish shows out (Firefly, John Doe, Smallville etc).

I thought it was pretty good and anything bad at this point is a nitpick. Hopefully they continue or even make it better with time instead of worse.
Oh, I didn't like how the huntress had super abilities in jumping and stuff. Batman didn't and neither did catwomen, so where she get them. And the eye thing was dumb it thought but like I said just small nitpicks.
Just about anything with Mrs Meyers is OK by me..........

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

I read on some talkback forum about the show that Catwoman had superpowers in the continuity that spawned BoP. Regardless, in the Marvel comics, superpowered mutants are often the offspring of non-superpowered parents. Not sure if DC's "metahumans" work the same way though...Knife wrote:Oh, I didn't like how the huntress had super abilities in jumping and stuff. Sorry didn't catch that, what does it mean. I don't watch WB often.

They also had a reference to this not being the Twilight Zone (UPN's new show, same timeslot), and a "Spider-senses tingling" reference (probably a result of the Spider-Man movie's repeated Superman references).Kelly Antilles wrote:Oh, anyone else notice the little plug for WBs other DC show?
They were talking to Dinah about her abilities and how they manifest. Huntress goes something along the lines of, "Yeah, we hear meteor showers are popular."
Anyway, I'll reserve my judgement on the show until later. I like Smallville better, but it's been on longer so I've seen more character development than Birds of Prey has had an opportunity to show.
Stylistically, the two shows are very different, so comparing it to Smallville isn't fair, though. Birds of Prey does seem cheesier, though. Probably because the cast hasn't gotten familiar with the roles yet, so they're taking themselves too seriously in same cases, and not seriously enough in others.
I thought Huntress's non fight leaping up walls and stuff seemed too much like Mutant X. I also thought her acting was kind of weak and made the show kind of cheesy. Especially her delivery on the "I am the weapon" line. It could have been done so much better.
When Huntress made that leap over the building after she escaped from the detective, was that a digital stuntman like in Spider-man and Blade 2? It was pretty quick but it seemed like that to me. Anybody know?

No Man's Land came about after Gotham was destroyed by an earthquake - the US Government decided it would cost too much to rebuild the city so they simply sealed it off completely and it literally became a no man's land; anyone still inside when they sealed it off was trapped.
And Bird's of Prey (particularly the character of Oracle) has been around a hell of a lot longer than Dark Angel (which has been thankfully cancelled...)

It's the old Batman TV series aimed to the teen/YA demographic, with three curvy yet slightly anorexic girls doing the hero muscle work, and on top of it trying to take itself seriously. And I also got a sense that it was just the same formulae as Mutant X (a show which lost me the moment they decided to have Andy Warhol as the chief villain). Some of the dialogue ("I'm the Huntress, and you're prey") simply reeked of really bad writing which wouldn't even make the cut for a comic book today. Not even the original Batman had lines that ridiculous —even during the awful Batgirl season.
Take away the chick factor, and essentially you've got a cheap knock-off series of second and third bananas filling in for the heavyweight characters that DC wouldn't release the license for.
I wouldn't give this show any more than two seasons. If that.

It was a very long story but it started with Gotham being totalled by a massive earthquake. The damage was so bad that congress voted to just abandon the main island of Gotham (ie Manhatten) and close it off from the rest of the countryinstead of rebuilding, essentially making it "No Man's Land". Essentially it got turned into something similar to NYC in Escape From New York because some people stayed, including most of Batman's wacked out villians.Galvatron wrote:I never read any DC comics. If you don't read the comics I think there is a novelization by Gred Rucka. He wrote most of the "No Man's Land" stuff.

BatCripple was listing things that may cause MetaHumans, and Huntress said "I've heard alot about meteor rocks lately" or something like that. She was saying like a joke, I think they were making fun of Smallville, but it could also mean a cross over.
All pilots suck, but this one seems to be a syndicated show with better graphics, the writing and fighting all have the feel of a syndicated show. I may be swayed into liking it later, but I don't like what they did with some characters, BatCripple and Harliquen being a psycologyst, and they reveal she's behind the bad things in the first episode. Also the cop kinda reminds me of something from Charmed.

I thought it reminded me a bit of the Flash tv show from a few years ago. At least in the feel, which is very similar to a syndicated show minus the extreme camp of most of them. Not that there isn't a little camp since it is a "comic book" show. I guess it is a bit like the first season of Nightman but not like the mega-cheese of Xena/Hercules/Cleopatra 2525/Jack of All Trades.
Harlequin was a psychologist in the Batman cartoon before she went crazy and joined up with the Joker. I guess in this reality she must not have been active in his gang, or the Bat-crew never put together the connection between the Joker's girlfriend and the psychologist.
Barbra Gordon being in a wheel chair and doing all the computer stuff is directly from the comics. It is too bad that Dina Meyer isn't going to be involved in much of the action of the show because she has been pretty good at it in the past.
One thing I was surprised about in watching the pilot was that I liked the Black Canary character much more than I expected. After the kick-butt comic character I wasn't too keen on the idea of a psychic version but she was much better than I expected.

D'OH! I forgot, thats where the Joker got to her. But she was never a leader, and why is she consuling Huntress(as a problamatic 20 year old) and insane criminals?Tsyroc wrote: Harlequin was a psychologist in the Batman cartoon before she went crazy and joined up with the Joker. Good point. Harley was always kind of a space case and not the type to do any long term planning.anarchistbunny wrote:D'OH! I forgot, thats where the Joker got to her. I would guess that no one knew Harley's connection to Joker in this reality, other than maybe in a professional capacity, so she's the psychoanalyst of choice for the wackos of New Gotham.
As for why she's counseling Huntress, at this point my guess is that she knew Helena was Catwoman's daughter and may have been looking to "bring her over to the dark side". She certainly seemed surprised about Bruce Wayne being Helena's father and I don't get the impression that she knows about Helena being Huntress or being a metahuman. From what I've read in the spoiler department it sounds like Harley likes to mess with the heads of some of her patients so I think she saw some (Joker style) potential in Helena after the rather extreme traffic accident that ended up sending her into Harley's care.
