M:TG - Which strategies are hip with the kids today?

Since I haven't played regularly since Revised, I'm completely behind the times on Magic. What's popular right now?

You might want to explain those to him.

Lots of elves. -stabs elves- Spiders, sometimes, too. Green is a very popular color these days. Spores and thallids aren't as common anymore.

Goblins, Tendrils/Brain Freeze, Elves are all pretty common... I'm not too up to date on the tourney scene though, but last I checked, Goblin Charbelcher was dominating in T2.

I don't play myself, but my brother has something he calls the Infinite Squirrel Combo, using Squirrel Nest and Earthcraft. Squirrel Nest is a land enchantment that must be attached to a forest. It gives the land the ability "Tap, put 1/1 Green squirrel token into play." Earthcraft lets you untap land. Tap the Squirrel Nest land, put a squirrel into play, untap the land with Earthcraft. Lather, rinse, repeat. Name the number of squirrels you want to stop at, because its an infinite loop. Getting run over by 50,000 squirrels has got to be embarrassing.

Squirrels are nasty little buggers.. Counter creatures aren't as common as big, fast combinations are, tourney-wise, last I heard. Pings and burns are more common for the less tournament-inclined.

But he can get infinity counter creatures in a single turn. :P I don't care how big his opponent's creatures are. Can't block 'em all.

Inifinite Critters are nice, but they can either be scorched easily or a few use Blue/Black.

It's fun but usually I just prefer holding a person to having one land and whimper.

Fish U or U/R control, uses cheap blue creatuces, counters and bounce and or burn to win against your opponent
goblins Attack with bunch of goblins + piledriver
madness Based around the Madness ability, three main varients are G/R, G/U, and G/R/U, core of deck--->basking rootwalla, wild mongrel, arrogant wurm, water front bouncer.
affinity artifacts and affinity, wins with a broodstar
tog upheavel 3 mana floating play tog, lay island, next turn attack and win.
stax not quite sure, I belive a prison type deck
mud same as stax.
Then of course theres keeper, the ultimate in control. 4 colors runing just about every restricted card and the answer to any problem.

That infinite squirrel deck also has cards to beef squirrels. By the time he's done, its infinite 4/4 or better squirrels. :P

That is what Balance is for

Stax/Wielder MUD primarily uses Tangle Wire and Smokestack to lock the opponent down. Commonly included cards are Goblin Wielder, Sphere of Resistance, Chalice of the Void, and Metalworker. Meditate is also very nasty coupled with this deck...

I think in T2, there was a Twiddle Storm deck, which basically kept Twiddling a Gilded Lotus to produce mana, then played Mind's Desire and/or Tendrils of Agony.

Not commonly mentioned, but there's a deck that's fun to play... Quirion Dryad.
