What flavor is yellow cake supposed to be?

My roommate likes making boxed cakes. A fw months ago she made one called a yellow cake. I wondered then and she didn't know what flavor yellow is supposed to be. Does anyone here know?

Well there's chocolate cake mix, so I guess yellow is, indeed, vanilla. Now if they'd only make neopolitan cake mix, then the peoples of the Earth would know true joy.

From the Cake-Maker's Daughter:

Chocolate Cake is chocolate.
White cake is vanilla
Yellow cake is lemon.

Of course, these are all recipes from Scratch, not a boxmix.

Actually they have a Butter Flavor Cake. It's similar but doesn't quite have the sweetness of Yellow Cake.

I think yellow cake is buttercream flavoured. But what's wrong with having the flavour itself be yellow? You all know that NyQuil is flavoured by colour (red and green)--why not cake too?

Every yellow cake has always tasted like sponge cake to me. Kind of a hint of vanilla.
