If it's the one I think it is (network's bandwidth is being sucked up by someone right now), the local news network played it during the primetime news  . I have no problem with it being accessible for those who want to see it (like this thread), but it shouldn't be placed out there when little kids are likely to be watching the TV.

That's sweet. I think that's probably the only way I could ever kill someone purposely, from far away, without actually seeing their face or anything.

Yeah, the GAU-8A is awesome. 7 barrels of 30 mm death, available 4200 times per second.

Um, isn't that taken from the FLIR HDD of an AH-64D? In which case it would be a Chain Gun?

It's not the GAU-8A, it's the Apache's 30mm chaingun (can't remember the M designator).

M230 30mm Automatic Gun. It is a single barrelled 30mm gun. Its not capable of near the refire as the GAU-8B, but thats because the AH-64 has more on target time whereas the A-10 must swoop in quickly, straff a target (or targets) and quickly pull up.

It was posted in N&P that this was from Iraq, and that the three men were killed because they had something that they thought was a weapon, a tube of some sort.

I love this bit:
The gun duty cycle is as follows: six 50-round bursts with 5 seconds between bursts followed by a 10- minute cooling period. For bursts limited settings other than 50, the duty cycle can be generalized as no more than 300 rounds fired within 60 seconds before allowing the gun to cool for ten minutes, after which the cycle may be repeated.
Bah, if I'm an AH-64 pilot going into a hot zone, the chaingun is going
to be firing continiously, and I'm not coming back with any of my
1,200 rounds left in the hopper

If you melt the barrell, you might change your story.

Bah, I'll just get a replacement back at base. Besides, how many
times did the barrel change requirements for the MG-42 and
all post war MGs get "ignored" in hot zones?

Nothing like shooting the rifling out of a barrel, according to my dad in Vietnam troops would sometimes melt the barrels on M2's after linking up a couple thousand rounds pretty much for the hell of it. The things could actually get white hot and keep firing; at the end of it all the guns mechanism would still be useabul.

But anyway, modern high performance aircraft cannon barrels don't last too long; evidently the Bk.27 (used on the Tornado, Eurofighter and possibul F-35) basically needs its barrel changed as often as the magazine. Ultra low barrel life is also why Russian cannon have gotten such good performance and weight for so long. Though I suppose with helicopters, which make far greater use of there guns they and western designers do better.

Here is what it would be like trying to put the Avenger on the Apache.

Imagine trying to step infront of a train and trying to stop it with your body.

See. While funny, its also very messy. :P

With some strengthening you could likely mount and fire the cut down GAU-13 gunpod version from the wings, 826 kg with 4 barrels and 353 rounds of ammuntion. I doubt the recoil would be a real big issue, accuracy would be however.
