The fleet emerged. The formation of the fleet was drastically different from what had been telegraphed with the initial jump location. From the middle of the fleet, a superlaser beam lanced out, shattering the planetary shield.

Again, the fleet lashed out with a swarm of missiles, most of the aimed at the capital city. And they prepared for the inevitable onslaught of hypermissiles, before they could jump out again.

The Commonwealth strike force dropped out of hyperspace at point-blank range with the enemy shipyards. Fully half of the Assault Fleet was there, and they had come loaded for bear. The Dreadnoughts Uller, Skadi, Panthesilea , and Ameratsu immediatly began to pound the massive facility, along with their swarm of escorting Heavy Cruisers. The vessels had jumped in, interposing the large shipyard between them and the planet it orbited, shielding them from the direct-fire weapons on the planetary surface.

The heavy shields of the shipyard were well-designed and quite resillient, but they were essentially theatre shields, orders of magnitude less powerful than those which would protect a planet. The shields weakened, and then popped spectacularly, causing the Commonwealth vessel's shielding to flare.

The massed Commonwealth fleet carved the shipyard and every vessel in it's slips to peices. A volley of unguided bombardment rockets turned the wreckage into so much dust- little remained of the shipyard when the Commonwealth vessels jumped out, leaving the burned hulks of a Heavy Cruiser and a trio of destroyers behind, victims of the enemy counterfire.

Over another world in the Republic, the same scene was carried out by the other half of the Commonwealth strike fleet.

At the edge of the Corneria system, Assault Manipule Alpha fled from the 7th fleet, avoiding them for as long as possible. AM Alpha wasn't here to fight.

The Corsair Republic's assault force was still at large in the PRC, mocking the stretched and overworked 2nd Fleet as it failed to stop any of their raids. Concentrated attacks from a dozen Gangster's were more than any of the divided fleets' parts could handle, and the two Battleships just turned it to overkill. Yet, someone was smashing all the good stuff.

The dozens of ships ramped up to speed between Infra- and Ultraspace, chasing down the Commonwealth fleet, sending a message via tightbeam.

/No style, kids! No style! Smash & grab, not just smash! Heading for the national capital; want to divvy the stash? Have a way through their planetary shielding./

Grand Admiral St. Juste read the message. It's contents disturbed her- the almost childlike glee the corsairs took in their work. She had to hand it to them- they were ruthlessly efficient. She grinned to herself. In her time as commander of the Azegart occupation, she had dealt with some of their subsidiary pirate groups, but none of them had matched the mainstream Alliance for strength and ingenuity. These pirates were more dangerous than the run of the mill- that was certain.

"Send word to all the vessels of the fleet. They are to form up, and follow Assault Plan B. Send word to the Corsairs, give them the time and coordinates of our attack jump. I think we are going to want to come in hard and fast, right snug up to the planet."

"Oh, and thaw out the Marines, and get them set for short-duration actions. It looks like out dubious friends have figured out a way to crack the shielding, so we'll show our friends how the Commonwealth "Grabs.""

The maneuver was ridiculously dangerous. The coordinates the local defense commander had sent were imperfect, skewed by the Cornerian jammers, but the target locks were true- the massed volleys of missiles and the Superlaser discharge had been bright and easy to spot on the sensors screens.

Using a page from the Cornerian's own books, the vessels of HRMs Iota, Beta, and Delta, along with SDMs Alpha and Omega, dropped from hyperspace literally right on top of the Cornerian fleet. The massive energy weapons of the Commonwealth Dreadnoughts began speaking, focusing their fire on the source of the superlaser blast. The weapons platforms over the burning surface of Jacob's Landing added their own fire to the conflagration.

Fighters swarmed out, tearing into the Cornerian vessels.

The TSC fleet didn't have much time to savor their surprise as the PRC began a fold jump immediately after they showed up. The massed gravity waves of the fold drives instantly began to affect the TSC fleet, before the PRC fleet disappeared.

"There is a faction among the military that want's to see the empire grow and is willing to kill you to do it."

"Perhaps they are simply tired of your long winded speaches about "freedom" and "justice", perhaps they understand that real power comes through force, and not pathetic ideals like the ones you claim to hold dear."

Then chalen pulled a pistol from his robes and shot the emperor, while the infiltraitors, armed with stolen TSC weapons, began killing the emperor's loyal support staff

Chalen turned to the commando leader.

"It is done. Send word to commander Jankowski in the occupied territories, I want the first, third and fourth fleets attacking the TSC by the time we declare war."

"It shall be done......Emperor"

Within several hours, an official press release had been issued. The emperor had been murdered by agents of the TSC, in response for withdrawing from the Grand alliance and the Co-prosperity sphere.
two hours after that, the senate unanamously voted for war against the TSC.

Go to the Aquarian Kiratals system. There is an orbital warehouse at the L3 station. Accept the contents of lots 12-43 with my complements. The access code is *******. I will call ahead to approve the transfer.

That particular storehouse contained some military surplus equipment he donated for the now-defunct Aquarian space militia. There were a multitude of light capital-scale weapons, shield generators, interdictors, missiles, decoys, and spare parts there. Some of that might be useful.

The vessels headed back to the Commonwealth, loaded with heavy weapons and gear.

Within minutes, the call was answered as a trio of CSDF destroyers arrived from hyperspace. The IFF signal broadcasted by the Commonwealth frigate was immediately checked and verified against databases; then standard hailing channels were opened.

The message fell on deaf ears. The Commonwealth had damaged most of the systems in their hit and hype. As it was the Affront had picked them up as they had been pulling out.

There was no good way to bring them to heel but they could follow them and report the enemy's position.

The KSN fleet attacked swiftly, exchanging long range fire with the platforms, staying out of range of the heavy guns and letting the sheer volume of fire rip them apart, then they moved in on the PD satallites and opend fire on them, leaving nothing between the fleet and the planet.

The third fleet moved into position and loosed their weapons on the surface of coventry, targeting military installations and ground weapons.

After the ships broke through the planetary shield, they started hitting anything on the surface that looked like a military facility.

Fire raged across the surface of Coventry. The bombardment had accomplished many of it's objectives- More than half the planet's air defense weapons had been destroyed.

The hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths were an uinfortunate side effect of the bombardment.

The surviving Commonwealth soldiers hunkered down. They knew this would be coming, and were prepared as one could be for it. None of the Militia troops had broken- if anything, their resolve was strenghthened.
