How can one make oneself cry, when you know you really need it but it just doesn't happen?

No, this isn't for me, it actually is for a friend. He's obsessing over something and needs to let loose but can't.

Cut up an onion. Or pry into his mind with probing questions about what's wrong until he comes to what he should be crying about, and then does so.

The first option's the easier of the two.

Oh no, he knows specifically what's wrong, he just can't cry, like properly. It's rejection as far as i can tell.

Men, in my experience, aren't big cryers. Maybe he needs to vent frustration or something.

What you want to do is get something emotionally important to tell someone. Make sure to reherse what you are going to say over and over in your mind. Be completely prepared mentally to convey it with a minimum of emotion. Then go tell them.

Voila, instant waterworks.

I'd suggest a punching bag. It's surprising how theraputic it can be to just let everything out as you wail on the bag.

I think he goes to a n actual fight club, so i don't think that's the problem.

When you said, "It's rejection as far as I can tell," did you mean the issue about which he should be crying? Or why he can't cry in the first place?

Well, he's severely gutted about it and feels he should be crying but can't.

He'll cry if and when he needs to. If he can't do so yet, then he doesn't need to yet. And maybe he never will; guys are weird about the whole crying thing.

If it's something serious like that someone he loves died, maybe he should look into therapy if he is trying to deal with his emotions and feels like he isn't getting anywhere. If it isn't something that serious, then maybe he's one of those guys who only cries when something really, really terrible happens.
