I don't get it. It looks to me like the art was condemning the suicide queen, not praising her.
Shitty artwork but that's besides the point.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

mohammed atta's pic being displayed

I don't know. It doesn't seem to be making much a statement either way. It's certainly open to interpertation.Joe wrote:I don't get it. It looks to me like the art was condemning the suicide queen, not praising her.
Hey, welcome to nu-art. Slap any stupid shit together and it's art. Industrial accident? It's art. Your girl friend purged on the floor? Art. Your dog took a dookie on your shoe? Art.Joe wrote:Shitty artwork but that's besides the point.

It's conceptual art. A while back, IIRC, the Director of Art for the Carnegie tried to move a collection of pipes she thought was an installation. She succeed in moving it, but unfortunately all the toilets on the next floor up stopped working and the room flooded. Anything can be art as long as it Means Something.

EDIT: That does not, however, excuse the Ambassadors actions. He was way out of line there. Destroying the installation and possible endangering lives is inexcusable.

The idea behind the art is that she, the suicide bomber, was a normal woman, loving mother, lawyer, etc. And yet she went on to create such a bloodbath. Thats why her picture is floating in the middle of a pool of 'blood', to emphasis that she was just an average person, but she did something incredibly horrible.

Dictionarilly speaking;
4 a : the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects; also : works so produced b (1) : FINE ARTS (2) : one of the fine arts (3) : a graphic art
Personally I think it's any visual work that the creator makes for the purpose of enjoying its appearance.

The controversial part may be the fact that the women in question blew herself up one day after her brother was killed in front of her eyes by IDF soldiers. The message behind that probably doesn´t go well with the current israeli political line. The linked article doesn´t seem to mention it but i read that in a german source.kojikun wrote:The idea behind the art is that she, the suicide bomber, was a normal woman, loving mother, lawyer, etc. And yet she went on to create such a bloodbath. Fun developments since then:
- Ariel Sharon publicy applauded the ambassadors action.
- Apparantly it wasn´t a spontanous act. The ambassador knew beforehand of the exhibit and planned his reaction.

Is the Israeli leadership on crack? Are they so smug in there position of American favor that they think they can get away with this childish shit indefinately?Sebastin wrote:Fun developments since then:

Seconded. And for good measure, fuck Palestine.Fuck Israel.
of course the relevant piece of art destroyed by the diplomat has absolutely nothing to do with this accitedential "art" described by you. there´s a concept behind the bloddy basin and the ship foating in it, maybe a bit too cheesy for some people but definetly nothing like dog shit, unless you´re one of those people who need mountains, trees and waterfalls to consider something art.Stormbringer wrote: Hey, welcome to nu-art. They have every right to be smug, the rest of the world has made their position on Israel clear yet they continue to do as they please, as long as the US backs them they can and will do whatever the hell they like.Lazy Raptor wrote:

The Swedish government should throw him out of the country and tell Israel that if they can't find people with the appropriate level of decorum then they shouldn't send an Ambassador at all.

Whether people consider the art good or not is irrelevant. He had no right to destroy it and he certainly didn't have the right to throw a spotlight into a pool of water, which could have potentially injured someone. I hope there are some consquences for the ambassador in question (I don't fault Israel here, despite poor taste in diplomats). I doubt their will be, since ambassadors can get away with huge amounts of shit and still not be punished.

Why not blame Israel? Sharon has appluaded the guys actionsGil Hamilton wrote:Whether people consider the art good or not is irrelevant. "I think the phenomenon [of anti-Semitism] is so serious that it would have been forbidden not to have acted on the spot," Mr Sharon said.
"I called our ambassador in Sweden Zvi Mazel last night and thanked him for his strength in dealing with increasing anti-Semitism, and told him that the entire government stands behind him," Mr Sharon told a cabinet meeting Sunday.
"I think Ambassador Mazel behaved in an appropriate way."
Israeli foreign ministry spokesman David Saranger had urged the Swedish Government to "take steps to remove it".
