Defragging Programs

Post by Exonerate »

Can anybody recommend a good defragging program? The built-in Windows one doesn't work very well with me...

Something free, of course.

"Either God wants to abolish evil, and cannot; or he can, but does not want to. ... If he wants to, but cannot, he is impotent. If he can, but does not want to, he is wicked. ... If, as they say, God can abolish evil, and God really wants to do it, why is there evil in the world?" -Epicurus

What OS and filesystem are you running? NTFS is difficult to defragment when you don't have much free space to work with.

The included defragmenter in Windows 2000 and Windows XP is a licensed, stripped-down version of Diskeeper. IIRC, the manufacturer has a trial version of the complete edition somewhere on their website.

I'm running Windows XP, with FAT32 on the drives I need to defrag...
Well, I left the comp running last night and defragged my C drive. Looks like it works after all... Problem solved, thanks.

Here's a tip I heard a little while ago: run defrag in safe mode. I used to get the idiot messages that the drive contents had changed, causing the whole thing to restart. Run in safe mode, these problems go away.

Yeah, I got those under Windows ME. They seemed to have fixed that in Windows XP though...
