Hyperspace shortcuts
I wan wondering if it wouldn't be faster to fly out of the galactic plane, hyperspace to a point above your destination and fly back into the galactic plane, instead of flying from the core to the outer fringe of the galaxy inside the plane. Mass shadows slow you down, and there should much less of them outside the plane.
I know that there are a few "hyperspace lanes" that you can go full speed in because they are cartographed so well, but when you travel to a backwater planet, taking the shortcut could reduce the time you have to navigate through mass shadows drastically.

Saxton hypothesizes this is sometimes done, but hyperlanes inside the galactic plane are even shorter.

That is why I explicitly stated that it would be an option for travel to backwater planets - i.e. planets that are far from hyperspace lanes.

Don't forget 80% of the mass of a galaxy is in the "dark matter"... and this continues up to the halo, you might even get MORE problems because of it.GySgt. Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

Then you'd just follow a route that has already been established.GySgt. Hartman wrote:That is why I explicitly stated that it would be an option for travel to backwater planets - i.e. planets that are far from hyperspace lanes.

Alright, I hadn't thought of that.
Here it says that the Halo is a sphere of approx. the same diameter as the galaxy that it surrounds. That would presumably end the discussion.
Thanks for helping.

As opposed to an established route that has not yet been established? (Sorry, I just couldn't help it ).Spanky The Dolphin wrote: Then you'd just follow an established route that has already been established.
Yes, I was wondering what would be faster: following a route that is not chartered well or jumping out of the plane and taking the shortcut (because I wrongly assumed there wouldn't be a lot of matter outside the galactic plane).
