The only way i can see a single film costing this much is if they got rid of any and all CG and built every special effect and set for real, as an on-set practical effect. No mattes, no miniatures, no CG. Then i can see a justification.

Is this a rumor or is it confirmed? because it smell like bullshit to me. Even in my wildest dreams i'd have a hard time trying to just think of ways to spend that much money.

Why does it smell like bullshit?

Its unnecessary. Making movies in hollywood is all about making money. You want to make the maximum amount of profits for the smallest cost. Harry Potter 4 would make the same amount of box office gross with a $100 million dollar budget. 300 is so obscene that the film would have to gross about 500 million dollars domestically to generate any sort of worth-while profit, and that is completly unheard of. There is no way that HP4 will cross any more than 300 mil, the HP craze has peaked. Why spend that much when theres no reason to? Studios are notorious penny-pinchers and this seems like that scene in Batman where the Joker is throwing out free cash from a balloon--something doesnt quite feel right.

What, they couldn't just pay WETA in New Zealand money?

I doubt that figure is accurate. That's a hell of a lot of money for one movie. Although, of all the ones to spend it on, Goblet of Fire is the one to do it on. That's my favourite. :D

And why does anyone have to choose between LOTR and HP? I love them both. No need to choose!

It can't be.

ROTK had a budget of 94 million dollars. That is 52,626,062.15 pounds. So if the budget for HP is 5 million more pounds, that is about 57 million pounds or about 103 million dollars.

I can't imagine how this could be accurate.

The only way a movie could cost three (HUNDRED) million dollars is if it were the greatest motion picture ever made and will ever be made in the history of cinema...

With that much money you could have a CGI wankfest AND a good director.

Well, the first two movies weren't bad. Supposebly the PoA director has been held in high regard.

I don't know about the Director of Mona Lisa Smile dong GoF tho....

The only thing I recognize from the PoA director's movies is Y Tu Mama Tambien.
