I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

And this might have been funded by a church? What century is this again?

An Erisian Hymn:
Onward Christian Soldiers, / Onward Buddhist Priests.
Onward, Fruits of Islam, / Fight 'till you're deceased.
Fight your little battles, / Join in thickest fray;
For the Greater Glory / of Dis-cord-i-a!
Yah, yah, yah, / Yah-yah-yah-yah plfffffffft!

Jeez. I'd really like some more information on this case than the article was able to provide. If these allegations are true, though, I hope that these guys are put away for a LONG time.

One would kinda hope so, especially since their ceremony doesn't seem to match Catholic Exorcism rites.Lazy Raptor wrote:I think it meant that they were living there with assistance from the church, not that the church was supporting their little "operation".

I don't think the Catholic church is into that sort of thing anymore.

No, but individual Catholics in various places around the world are still known to do things like that on occasion, although it is generally associated more with more obscure cults when it happens in western nations.

They maintain it is a valid practice so they don't have to recant on their past bullshit, but they never approve it anymore. Its politics as usual.

Oh, definately. I thought that was implicit since we were discussing an event in a western nation. I will try to be more clear in the future.Darth Wong wrote:No, but individual Catholics in various places around the world are still known to do things like that on occasion, although it is generally associated more with more obscure cults when it happens in western nations.

While it's my understanding that some exorcisms are allowed by the Church, they had EMT's on sight during such. This.. This is a deranged looney. And hopefully one that will get caught.

I was given the distinct impression that the Catholic church does still perform exorcisms, but they are very much hush hush and gravely serious affairs.Howedar wrote:I don't think the Catholic church is into that sort of thing anymore.
The thing is that Catholic exorcism is nothing like the sort of things that you get with the very severely Protestant groups, like the extreme kinds of soth Baptists. I've heard terrible things about the way they "drive out the Devil".

One of Jack Chick's cronies that I met once wanted to perform an exorcism on me, because to be a D&D playing Christian must mean demonic possession of some kind. I'm a little big to sit and take it while someone beats the snot out of me, though. I don't think he wanted the beating approach, if only because I could kill him barehanded if I so chose and he knew it.

I have, and here is a passage from The Skeptic's Dictionary about it.Howedar wrote:I've never heard the slightest whisper of such bullshit.
An exorcism is a religious rite for driving Satan or evil spirits out of a possessed person, place or thing. In ancient times, many cultures had such rites. Today, the Roman Catholic Church still believes in diabolic possession and its priests still practice what is called "real exorcism," a 27-page ritual involving the use of holy water, incantations and various prayers, incense, relics or Christian symbols such as the cross, to drive out evil spirits. The Catholic Church has at least ten official exorcists in America today (Cuneo). The Archbishop of Calcutta, Henry Sebastian D'Souza, says he ordered a priest to perform an exorcism on Mother Teresa shortly before she died in 1997 because he thought she was being attacked by the devil.
