In spite of the extensive preparations made before the Nazi invasion, large regions of the Soviet Union more developed, industrialized and populated ones were devastated as a result of over two years of fierce combats. The death of over thirty million people in the war caused a severe loss of manpower. The reparations of war, the creation of the Comecon, the extensive use of militar investment and the help of the USA during the war were needed to make posible its eventual recovery (something that did take years).

Yeah, four years of total war really took its toll on the Soviet economy.

Fucked. It took until the 1960s for soviet GDP to recover to pre-war levels.

Indeed, Soviets had far more heavy industrial capacity at the end of the war, but overall there economy was trashed, agriculture ruined and to top if off they had lost as many as 50 million people in the span of two decades. That is the equivalent of Britain's losses on the Somme, every three days, for twenty years straight.

I'd be wary of any GDP figures though, not even the Soviets really knew just what was going on, one more reason for there downfall, but in any case it did take over ten years to repair the worst of the damage.
