Nah, that'll happen if the former Mexican provinces get sick of Bush and decide to secede and go to Mexico :D

Let's hope La Raza doesn't succeed in that mission. :P

Well, he is talking to a Black congregation. But yes, both sides pander to special interests. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. I simply have a problem with the idea of an ethnic or racial special interest group.

I agree, but is it any worse then a special interest that caters to big business like the insurance companies that Bulworth was talking about?

Joe wrote: I have trouble believing that Bulworth was particularly insightful politically, given that its central message seemed to be that hardcore socialist principles were the ticket to electoral success for the Dems.
Bulworth wasn't about promoting a solution so much as poking holes in the current way of doing things.

I think so. A company is an entity with a defined set of interests that it pursues in both the public and private arena. Black Americans are no more monolithic than any other loose association of people (like left handed people) in this country, yet Black America's political interests are purportedly defined and articulated by a few.

Corporations are concerned primarily with only one thing: making money for themselves and their stockholders. Naturaly when a company has their bottom line threatened, they will do anything in their power to stop it, regardless of the morality of the situation.

Take drug companies for example. Their inflated prices are destroying the United States health care system (although they are not the only thing that is doing so), but if they lower their prices or allow themselves to be regulated, they lose money, even if it is what is best for the nation as a whole. Corporations are incapable of seeing benefits outside their own bottom line, which is why we have the government around to regulate them. Some sectors need firmer regulation then others, and it is these companies that are trying their hardest to avoid regulation.

Take another example, spam email. The spam companies don't want to be shut down right? They are clogging the mailboxes of the entire free world, but they are doing everything in their power to stay operational. You might say spam is a bad example because the companies are evil, but are they any more evil then the drug companies that keep inflated prices and cause skyrocketing costs of health care? It is the fundemental flaw in the capitalist system that people can be jacked on things that you have that they need to survive, which is why I favor regulating such industries, including the insurance companies that were pulling Bulworth's strings.

No disagreement here, but how does this compare to the purported representation of ethnic special interests?

They are exactly the same. Both are wrong and self-serving.

I disagree. One is self-serving but representative. The other is not and racial.

Typo. That should read "the other is self serving, not representative, and racial."

So they are both wrong, you agree right? So what's the problem?

The issue for me is that pandering to big business does more damage then pandering to minorities so I tend to vote Democrat for that reason. Although things like afirmative action and uber-PC is setting back race relations, the consevative policy of giving blowjobs to big business has far worse consequences.

No, I've got no problem with chambers of commerce, environmental groups, religious action committees, veteran's organizations, unions, etc. I've got a problem specifically with ethnic special interest groups.

What sort of damage?

Corporate welfare needs to be restrained, but if you have a government already involved in distorting the market I would expect nothing less of a firm than to go to Washington and protect the interests of its shareholders.
