There's nothing like a six inch long bruise running vertically across your rib cage to remind you that skiing is a dangerous sport.

Was worth it, though.

I don't need injuries to remind me how much I like skiing. I suffer through every summer just waiting for winter to go skiing. And after skiing for 20 years, wrecks that hurt are far and few between. Though I do use a helmet now. I don't fear my skiing, I fear the idiots around me. If they screwup while I'm doing 50, thats going to hurt.

Ah... skiing...

Since it's snowing again, visibility is shit, and no doubt both the runway and airplane are covered with ice I don't think flying is on the list of activities for today. So it's off to the open fields for me (yes, I'm a cross country fan - much less crowded, and much cheaper)

Go ahead and keep showing off the personal inadequacy of snowboarders, Salm. It's funny. 8)

Disturbing/Funny anti-skiier story:

I was snowboarding with a skiier friend of the family, just the two of us, and we decide it would be a cool idea to ski Triple Trouble, an ungroomed trail on Loon Mountain. It had just snowed the night before, and it was gorgeous: two feet of relatively untouched powder. Unfortunately, it was two feet of powder over three feet of rocks. Needless to say, my buddy took a nasty header when he caught his tips on a rock. Complete yardsale. I start laughing, and I stop to help him. He's out cold, and there's blood everywhere. I radio for help on the Talkabout, and run to help him. Turns out that in his fall he had dropped one of his poles, and then fallen on top of it, point-up. The pole missed his testicles by about a half inch, had entered his pelvis, and was protruding out the back of him. Ski Patrol arrived quickly and got him to a hospital. He was fine, but apparently removing the ski pole from him was no easy task. We all had a good laugh about it later, and he has been dubbed "Chad the Impaler."

He recently took up snowboarding. Fancy that.

Geez, how did YOU wipe out?

I've walked off every single wipe out I've had, even the onee where my skis flew off, or where I landed between a couple of moguls. (Yow!) I rarely brusied...

On the other hand, for every year my brother has snowboarded, he has broken or fractured at least one bone. :P

My primary interest when going on the mountain is speed. Snowboarders are fucking turtles. When I am skiing, I am racing down that mountain. Not to mention the fact that skiers can handle a larger variety of terrain then boarders.

Its personal perference really. One of my best friends is begining to learn how to board and I go up with him and we have a blast. Another time I went up with two good friends. One a boarder, the other an intermediate skier. We had great fun tearing up the whole mountain.

What I don't like is the attitude some younger boarders have. They take up boarding to irritate their parents and they think they are all high and mighty. Furthermore I have noticed a distinct trend that boarders are less knowledgeable of Mountain Rules then skiers. Boarders tend to ignore the golden rule more often (Downhill Skier/Boarder has right away). I have been in many near accidents and one friend has been broadsided by a boarder who wasn't paying attention. That fucker even had the gall to tell my friend that he wasn't going to report the accident as if it was my friends fault.

There is one other little issue I have with some boarders. In general boarders tend to have this wonderful habit of sitting down on the landing of jumps. Sitting where you can't fucking see them until your about to land on the fucking idiots.

Note, I am talking about a relative minority who do not represent boarders as a whole. I will also openly acknowledge that there are problem skiers and that several have an inferiority complex that has them openly hostile to any boarder. This is similar to what is going on at the Aspen mountains area. They still have one mountain up there that is completely closed to boarders.

I hate skiing, I tried once when I was young while my mother was skiing. They had this class, where they taught us something while repeating "peanut butter and jelly." After a half hour I got really bored, went back into the lodge and watched the Chronicles of Narnia cartoon.

When I was much younger someone told me skiing was just like skating, but on snow so I shouldn't have any problems learning it. That someone was quite wrong, the first few times I skied I could get down the hill faster by falling down it than I could by skiing. Eventually I became a decent skier though I still don't like leaving the ground. Steep hills? no problem. Speed? No problem, but I still get butterflies when I go off a jump.

I'm not that fond of moguls, and I get nervous on ice dispite my ability, but I'm a pretty damn good skiier, if I say so myself.

Ah skiing. I so rarely get the time to go, which is sad for two reasons: one being that I greatly enjoy it, and second is that WNY has a good dash of ski resorts.

I've only gone once this year. :(

But at least I didn't wipe out the way I did last year. Hehe.

I was going fairly quickly over rather hard-packed snow and sstaying low to keep my speed up. Unfortunately, I leaned a bit too far forward. Just as my mind started screaming "Oh shit!" I went face-first into the snow. I did two complete forward flips, losing my hat, my skis, and one glove in the process, then slid about fifteen feet on my face. Rather dazed, I sat up to look back at my trail of devastation and removed my goggles. Later on at the lodge, I realized that my goggles had worked as well as advertised and totally protected my eyes...meaning that the upper part of my face was normal, while everything below their rims was an angry red from the icy snow.

Gotta love it. :D

As a snowboarder, I acknowledge and understand this complaint. I, too, am more concerned with speed than mindless spinning around in the air (though that can be fun). What gets me is not the fact that some boarders are slow, but that slow boarders literally push all of the snow off of the trail leaving huge patches of ice behind them. Stupid asses. At least slow skiiers keep the snow on the trail.
What I don't like is the attitude some younger boarders have. They take up boarding to irritate their parents and they think they are all high and mighty.
All the punk-ass skaters snowboard in the winter. I share your anger.

Yeah, but that's true of skiiers, too. I've had my share of gnarly crashes with assholes hitting me from behind. Is it that hard to shout "on your left" when overtaking someone?
There is one other little issue I have with some boarders. In general boarders tend to have this wonderful habit of sitting down on the landing of jumps. Sitting where you can't fucking see them until your about to land on the fucking idiots.
But if you land on them you get bonus points.

I think what we need are mountains closed off to ski bunnies, m'self. I'm sick of neon pink one-piece ski suits with little fur collars. I suppose even worse are the poor saps who ski in jeans. ::Sighs:: When will they learn, Alyeska?

yeah, most of them, but so are most of the skiers. depends on your skills. i´m usually faster than most other people on the slope, both skiers and snowboarders. if handled correct you can go faster with skis though. anyway, i´m not there primarily for the speed, which can be fun for a while but for the jumping part. clif drops and stuff like that are my favorite. but i also like big ramps in fun parks and stuff like that. i´m sure you can do that with skis as well but it´s a lot harder. esspecially spins are nearly impossible for the skiing layman wheres you can do an acceptable 360 on a snowboard after the first or second season.
snowboarding is just a whole lot simpler which makes you able to actually do more cool stuff.
When I am skiing, I am racing down that mountain. Not to mention the fact that skiers can handle a larger variety of terrain then boarders.
what do you mean a larger variety of terrain. i can handle about any terrain you give me, as long as it doesn´t go upwards.
Its personal perference really. One of my best friends is begining to learn how to board and I go up with him and we have a blast. Another time I went up with two good friends. One a boarder, the other an intermediate skier. We had great fun tearing up the whole mountain.
sure, but insulting skiers is still fun. :P

well, the problem with accidents between boarders and skiers is that they both aren´t really compatible on one slope. skiers go down in this "swinging" way, this left-right-left-right hopping thingy whereas boarders don´t do that. on snowboard you don´t do this left-right-left-right hopping but you go down either straight ahead or in longer curves.
That fucker even had the gall to tell my friend that he wasn't going to report the accident as if it was my friends fault.
yeah, there´s fuckers everywhere.
There is one other little issue I have with some boarders. In general boarders tend to have this wonderful habit of sitting down on the landing of jumps. Sitting where you can't fucking see them until your about to land on the fucking idiots.
indeed. usually 15 year olds sitting there hand in hand with their dumbass girlfriens smoking a cigarette. i hate those people and they need to be shot.
Note, I am talking about a relative minority who do not represent boarders as a whole. really? i don´t notice any hostility towards boarders anymore. when i started back in 1994 though that was different. there were very few boarders, and the acceptance among skiers was pretty much not there. anyway, nowadays most people got used to boarders, don´t gibe a shit about them and the lift owners are have found a new type of customer who showels a whole bunch of money onto their bank accounts.
i was in the states last year, snowboarding in lake tahoe, and didn´t have any acceptance problems there either.
but then isn´t aspen this really, really bad luxurious snob skiing resort?

I went skiing at Kirkwood, California 2-3 weeks ago. Great day, snow conditions were average, but it was not crowded at all. I went on a Saturday and the crowds were more like a Friday. :)
