Networking question

Post by Superman »

I need to set up a network between my two PC's. I am using a wireless card that connects one to the router. I have a DSL connection. How do I start setting this up so I can share files?

Open the folder you wish to share in explorer, right click on it and choose share in the drop down menu.

To access the share from the other computer either type the name of the computer or the ip adress and share name like this:

\\computername\sharename

\\192.168.0.10\sharename

Edit

Or open a explorer window shoose my network places, Microsoft windows network, Workgroup, computer name, and finaly the share.

Alright, do you have a router? If so, before you even allow the PC with the wireless NIC to connect, check for firmware updates that enable WPA (Wireless Protection Algorithms). Once you've done that, lock that SOB down to the MAC address of the wireless NIC and the NIC in the other PC and turn off Broadcast ID. That'll make it nearly impossible for anyone to pick up that you have a WAP (Wireless Access Point) in your room and either steal bandwith or do nasty things through your pipe.

Now that you've done that, setting up shares is very easy as already explained in Faram's post. You can also right-click on individual folders and click on properties. Then click the share tab and add a share that way.
