we could use some competition. that's what really spurred on the move to get to the moon first. the russians announced that they were trying for it and we had to beat 'em to the punch.

Competition is definately a good thing, although modern Russian competition isn't as scary as Cold War era Soviet competition. I'm wondering how seriously they're going to try. Russia hardly seems capable of pulling off a Mars mission.

And with the Chinese just getting the hang of space flight, I don't think they're going to get in on this. Maybe they'll have a Moon landing by the time we hit Mars, but they probably won't be right behind us.

The Russians have a long list of infinitely more important things to spend billions on. Getting more then a probe to mars by 2020 is just wishful thinking.

Spending cash where it was needed hasn't been a common trait among our Rushkie friends, I don't see them going logical on us now.

Actually they've been pretty good about that, their problem is they forget or simply don't know how much cash they have in the first place.

The Russians don't have the funding to enter into a space race by themselves. Both the Americans and the Chinese have vastly more resources available to spend on the space race--particularly the Americans. My guess is that they're trying to declare their intention on making this an international effort instead of strictly an American/Chinese one.

Incidentally, the Chinese declared some time ago that they do intend to land on the moon, and possibly send a manned expedition to Mars, but they have yet to begin designing their manned space vehicles.

Because they won't go, we stopped going for a reason, and they learnt the reason.

They COULD fund, if they basically allowed the Russian Army and state to go to hell for lack of funding- wait, they are doing that now.

The Chinese in spite of not having a design, are still at about the same stage as us, because NASA(in its typical operational efficiency) will probably drop any good designs we have now from private groups and design a whole new one
