Usually when a new mod is needed, the other mods will discuss possible candidates until a consensus forms. The candidates are exclusively long-term members who've made significant contributions to the board and have stable enough personalities that they won't abuse their power. It helps if the member in question is one of the resident "experts" on whatever topic is discussed in the forum in question. The Horsemen are selected for the same basic criteria, except replace "interest in the topic" with sadism. In all cases, Darth Wong has the final word.
Supermods are promoted from among the ranks of the mods.
There are also mini-mods, who run private forums. Usually they're the person who spearheaded the effort to get the forum created, or someone selected by the members of that forum.
It should be noted that post count and seniority aren't direct factors in selecting a mod (though to have made "significant contributions", a member would have a fairly high post count and a lot of time on the board). As a matter of fact, of the top ten posters, only 3 are full mods, and one of them is Darth Wong.
As for becoming a mod yourself, I wouldn't hold your breath. Right now the mod staff is fairly stable and there's already an informal list of deserving candidates for mod positions should a vacancy open up or a new forum be added.

Well, it's not so much a list as there have been discussions about potential new moderators and names have come up.Queeb Salaron wrote:Any talk of making this list public?RedImperator wrote:As for becoming a mod yourself, I wouldn't hold your breath. Oh yeah. You're on the top of the list. Actually, they're talking about bumping you straight to supermod. Maybe admin.Straha wrote:I'm not on it am I?
Darth Wong is actually considering giving you the password to the database. That's how high on the list you are.

Sorry, I was a little pissy. Found out that in addition to a three minute speech that I have to give on Thursday(which I haven't written yet), I have to give a 2 minute impromptu speech, and a 10 minute interview(this is for an extracurricular activity). On top of that, out of the blue my chemistry teacher decided we should do 26 problems on problems involving the solubility product constant, and I have no idea how to do them(plus the text book is highly user-belligerent).Admiral Valdemar wrote:Down, boy. Fuck who'd want to be a moderator here? Thhis place attracts trolls like flys to sticky paper. I'd never trust myself with modship. I have a tendency to take things with people here quite personally and i can think of a few members who might torture where i to have any power of them. As it is i get by with random insults at opportune times.

Been a mod at a few forums in the past, fairly small ones set up by mates and the like. Can't say it was an amazing experience, I'd much rather avoid the hassle despite my previous inkling to be one at SB.com years ago.Lord Pounder wrote:Fuck who'd want to be a moderator here? I wouldn't mind myself, but I'm not exactly chomping at the bit. The idea of locking spammy threads does kinda give me a boner though.
Why are you reading this? Do you think the above was a joke? Well you're wrong.
Okay, you're right. So sue me.

Being a mod sucks, though the death threats can be pretty amusing at times. Oh, and to be mod you fill out & submit the application form and they'll get back to you eventually.
aerius: I'll vote for you if you sleep with me.
Lusankya: Deal!
Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.
