They didn't put Cowboy Bebop up there?!? They'll put some crappy Euro drama up against the best movies and give them the award, but they won't put a masterpiece like Cowboy Bebop up? Oh well, you know Finding Nemo is going to take it. Disney and Pixar have the pockets lined with gold for the officials.

Actually, that's exactly what it was. They told them it would have to wait till there US release to be nominated, so they did. Well, this year the Oscar assclowns told them they were disqualified because it was released in Japan before hand. So, all in all a beautiful fuck job by the oscar bastards.Daltonator wrote:Spirited Away beat out the Disney flick last year. I guess Disney doesn't want that to happen again. Probably some fucked up rule about Bebop being produced two years ago.
In order to properly qualify it has to be imported in the same year of its original release. If they're pissed off, blame the distriubtor--the only reason they hold back imports is to maximize profits anyway, so maybe they'll learn now.Shaidar Haran wrote:Actually, that's exactly what it was. Anyway, the only thing that dissapoints me this year is the Sean Astin didnt get nominated for best supporting actor for ROTK. I dont think he deserves to win, but he definitly earned a nomination.
I'm also suprised to sea City of God with more than a couple noms, which is a relief because its such a great and largely-unseen film.

I actually didn't think BeBop the Movie was that good. I lost interest halfway through, reminded me of a mediocre episode of their TV series. They even recycled the immortal villain idea.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Against those films? RotK had BETTER win. M&C is a great film, but it's nothing next LotR. I hope it wins some technical awards, though.

Actually, it was more Academy games than release dates that doomed it.zombie84 wrote:In order to properly qualify it has to be imported in the same year of its original release. And nominate a fantasy picture actor? Not if they can help it.zombie84 wrote:Anyway, the only thing that dissapoints me this year is the Sean Astin didnt get nominated for best supporting actor for ROTK. I dont think he deserves to win, but he definitly earned a nomination.

That's funny since the editing at the end pissed so many people off.Demiurge wrote:It's already nominated in half of the categories. Watch as it loses in every category except editing.
I don't think it'll win best picture either. They screwed the series when FotR didn't win best picture. Out of the theatrical cuts of these films it was the best of the three, and it was definately better than it's competition in the category. They just didn't want to give it to the first film in the trilogy.
I'm guessing there will be some bs special achievement type Oscar for LotR as a series but that'll be it.

Bah, knowing the oscars, Lost in Translation will get best picture.(It was a great film, yeah, but I still want RotK to win.)

Didnt Ian McKellan get a nom for the other films for best supporting? LOTR is the exception to the fantasy prejudice because its of unusually high quality. Same with Star Wars--Alec Guinness got a nomination as well i believe.Shaidar Haran wrote:And nominate a fantasy picture actor? Anyway, for best picture i think i have to with ROTK, though i'm torn between Lost in Translation and M&C. To be honest, ROTK could have been better, but its just such a great film and i think it would be a great honoring for the entire trilogy.

Don't be surprised if RotK wins Best Picture this year. The Oscar's are extremely polticial (witness the Whoppi Goldberg incident) and they are under a lot of pressure from New Line and fans to give RotK the Oscar in the major catigories. One reason they are likely to cave in and do it is because Hollywood wants to make more fantasy epics to follow on the success on LOTR, and a Best Picture Oscar will help to solidify the genre.

Well, its all sorts of campaigning by the production studios to get votes as well- the thign that normall happens is the Golden Globes make the decision. This year though, they're holding the Oscars a month early, and day of the Globes was the deadline for Oscar nominations. It should be less dependent on those now, but even still, its subject to lots of canvassing.
