Gov't Wins By 5 Votes In Top-Up Fees Vote

Well as I said on another board, either we go for higher fees which won't effect me or my brother though it will hamper my kids in the future, or we go the route America went and ask for extortionately high fees or let very few students in.

You can't have it free and excellent condition, money doesn't grow on trees.

This does seem very close though.

I presume this is some sort of college related bill? I'm rather curious what it is that this is all about. What does the bill mean to do?

It means to input £10bn more into university pockets by making the tuition fee price rise from £1100 a year to over 3k. They've gone from the grant system to fees to larger fees in no time at all.

Even this isn't what some universities want, Oxbridge for instance want to charge £10k or thereabouts while Exeter wants to keep fees the same.

Good god I hope that won't end up happening. The last thing we need is free-market education.

Blast, I was hoping that would have ended in up in a vote of no-confidence... I want to go Oxford, so they'd better bloody not jack it to 10K quid.

Damnit! It pisses me off. Rich families can afford it, and scroungers get it paid for, the only people losing out are the hard working people like my parents!
I just don't get why Blair says he wants more working class kids going to uni and then brings in stuff like top up fees!

I know the feeling, we earn enough to negate benefits but not enough to just see this as pocket change.

Damn my family's middle-class status!

Dang. £3000 for tuition, minimum? Most state schools only charge around $1500/semester (or so) in the US (or $3000/year). Private schools typically charge much more, of course.

If they had a reasonable fee for students, then i think some will learn what they need instead of partying in.

Thats my opinion

Well, here in Germany it is currently hotly debated if the universities are allowed to introduce tuition fees. In spring, there's a decision expected from our highest court if it confomrs with the constitution. If it is, universities will introduce fees of around 500 Euros.
If they do, I guess all hell breaks loose at our universities...

Well, I already have to work. And have to offer this semester's sacrifice of 101 Euro to the University of Stuttgart, may it burn in hell.
