here's one from our favorite drugs and excess band of the 1960's
The scariest folk song lyrics are "My Boy Grew up to be just like me" from cats in the cradle by Harry Chapin
That's paraphrased from a far older folk song from the British Isles iirc. 'Gallis Pole' should be Gallows Pole, since the man is trying not to be hung. The Yosemite Bear wrote:well the blues has never been about larger social issues
and it's always had substance.
Leadbelly wrote: "Mother, did you bring me silver
did you bring me gold
did you come to save me
from the the gallis pole."
The whole song is about hoping that his friends and family might buy his way out of the death sentence. In one version, the last verse has the Sister bringing gold, silver, and offering to sleep with the Hangman in order to set her brother free.
Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Heard an interview on the radio a while back with some guy who was heavily involved in leftist-politics in the 1970's who claimed that Streetfighting Man was written about/dedicated to him. Wish I could remember his name now.The Yosemite Bear wrote:here's one from our favorite drugs and excess band of the 1960's

Does anyone:
- Listen to Triple J & happen to remember who it was; and/or
- Know if there is any truth to this claim?
PPS: Social commentary or no, the Stones ROCK!!
Edit: Typo

After all, this is completely straightforward. What could possibly go wrong?
THIS LOOKS LIKE A JOB FOR EMERGENCY PANTS!
I hate Matt Damon and there's not a damn thing you can do about it
No, I'm not on drugs. I'm like this all the time.

I am willing to conceed that their more recent efforts are downright embarassing, (Bridges to Babylon [shudder]) and they really should have thrown in the towel some time back 'round the 1980s. But come on, The Midnight Rambler? Exile on Main Street? Sister Morphine? The Stray Cat Blues?Spanky The Dolphin wrote:In my opinion, they are highly overrated, and outlived their welcome about 30 years ago...
When it came to writing about sex, drugs & violence those guys were the masters.
Edit: Another typo [sigh]
Edit: Added note, but forgot to fix typo

[shrugs]Spanky The Dolphin wrote:I just don't like them at all. It's primarily how they sound (particularly Jagger).
You're entitled to your opinion, I suppose. Personally I think that, while Jagger is clearly no Pavarotti, his voice is perfect for what he sings about. I love the Stones' bluesy sound too.

I agree with him, sort of.Demiurge wrote:Well, that's certainly a unique opinion.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:In my opinion, they are highly overrated, and outlived their welcome about 30 years ago...
I happen to like a lot of their music up through to the early 80's but I often see them listed as one of the greatest bands ever. I'm sorry, they don't come anywhere close to being as inovative as the Beatles, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, or even the Who. The did have a fair amount of good music but other than that they've just hung around a long time. The Beatles and Zepplin both have more and better music in a much shorter time span than what the Stones have had.
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.

More Simon and Garfunkle
In a clearing stands a Boxer
and a fighter by his trade
and he carries the reminder
of every blow that laid him low
or cut him till he cried out
in his anger and his pain
'I am leaving I am leaving'
But the Fighter still remains

Simon & Garfunkel wrote:Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall Lyrics
Through the corridors of sleep
Past the shadows dark and deep
My mind dances and leaps in confusion.
I don't know what is real,
I can't touch what I feel
And I hide behind the shield of my illusion.
So I'll continue to continue to pretend
My life will never end,
And flowers never bend
With the rainfall.
The mirror on my wall
Casts an image dark and small
But I'm not sure at all it's my reflection.
I am blinded by the light
Of God and truth and right
And I wander in the night without direction.
So I'll continue to continue to pretend
My life will never end,
And flowers never bend
With the rainfall.
