The idea that beauty is entirely relative is somewhat perverse. While it's true that some cultures can promote a vastly different ideal of beauty than we do, it's also true that there are some objective standards one can apply to terms like "fit" and "healthy", which should be part of any healthy notion of aesthetics. And obese people do not fit them.

Not fat as in morbidly obese. More of just well fed (simply because well, it meant you weren't in danger of starving).

Nono. Look at the classic Renaissance paintings of women. They liked them full-figured and rounded. Yes, heavier than the modern Western ideal of beauty, but nowhere near fat.

for once i'd be in favor of having western ideals placed on another country. although, not too long ago iirc overweight men received a similar stature here in the US. if a man was rather heavy set that typically meaned he had alot of money and was seen as well off. rather than someone who was skinny. this of course didn't apply to women, but i'm amazed that the idea that being overweight is a status symbol is actually applied anywhere else in the world these days. . .

There is also one african tribe that practice fattening up women.

This isn't really confined to women, either: IIRC,some other tribes have (had)? a practice of fattening up men and then competing in something resembling sumo-wrestling matches.

From my understanding, sumo wrestlers are supposed to be in good health, even if they are big.

My approach to the subject is that being able to get fat is good because it shows that the country is well enough off that you can afford that luxury. However being fat is bad, reasonably plump is good (and on the right person very attractive) but obesity is BAD because it leads to health risks, and death.

My rambling two cents.
