i will support whoever gets the nomination, but damn if al sharpton isn't the most compelling of all of the candidates.

Al Sharpton is a cheap, unscrupulous, self-serving, self-absorbed, unprincipled, race-hustling political opportunist. He and people like him are not part of the solution to the problem of race relations in the US today, they are part of the problem.

Yet to this dumbass, he's "the best nominee". And why? Because he's charismatic. Because he's a great speaker.

The thing that gets me about these celebrity activists is that too many people listen to their opinions just because they are famous. People tend, subconciously, to assume if someone has become successful at something, and famous as a result of it, this person must be smart, and therefore, his/her opinion is to be valued. But it just ain't necessarily so. Being a successful musician doesn't mean you know jack about politics, or that you are a good judge of character. Being a famous actor doesn't mean you are an keen and insightful analyst of current events (as one director remarked about actors' intelligence - there's a reason we write their lines for them).

But too damn many of these celebrities these days, not only don't necessarily have any better grasp of politics and current events than the ordinary citizen, they also lack the humility, or just plain good sense to realize this. Expressing an opinion's their right, of course. Everyone's entitled to do it, and I'd be the last person in the world to favor coercing them to stop. But that doesn't mean I have to like it when some idiot uses his fame as a bully pulpit to speak out on matters upon which he clearly has no understanding.

Actually, I would like to see some real evidence that anyone's opinion is actually changed as a result of a celebrity's opinions.

Has anyone on this board ever reported hearing a celebrity's opinion and thinking "Wow, I must have been completely wrong the whole time! Thanks, Alec Baldwin!"? Have they ever even heard of someone who has had such an experience? If you disagree with a celebrity, it is incredibly easy to write their opinions off as ignorant Hollywood bullshit. If you agree with a celebrity, you will be applaud whatever point he made and argue that it doesn't matter where it came from, and it's an ad-hominem fallacy to harp on the fact that he's a celebrity. Either way, it doesn't actually change your mind.

Celebrity opinions don't piss me off until they start getting serious accolades for them, eg- Bono being nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize. He's a special case; he jetsets all over the world trying to meet world leaders and play up his "special role". Most celebrities just express their opinions on personal websites, which is the same thing all of us do except that we're not famous.

Well, I guess he's more popular with younger people, and from what I know he's fairly popular overseas as well. He used to be a bit more avant-garde, but with his 1999 album he branched out more into the mainstream.

Well, his newer music isn't politically motivated is it? So I fail to see how his political views would taint his music. Perhaps you need to feel as 'one' with him to enjoy his music.

It's funny that you mention this, but my political science professor was just telling us that political endorsements, be they from celebrities, newspapers or politicians, have little to no effect on voter opinions. That was perhaps the most inspiring thing I'd heard in years.

He's a pop musician who does techno-remix style music and some other things. He apparently performs, mixes, and records all of his music himself. That makes me respect him more than most other pop-stars, since I doubt most of them could do that, but frankly his views still count for shit, IMO, on issues like politics.
