Bloody Sunday Rememberance thread

Post by The Yosemite Bear »

U2 wrote: Yes...

I can’t believe the news today
Oh, I can’t close my eyes and make it go away
How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? how long...

’cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...

Broken bottles under children’s feet
Bodies strewn across the dead end street
But I won’t heed the battle call
It puts my back up
Puts my back up against the wall

Sunday, bloody sunday
Sunday, bloody sunday
Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday bloody sunday...)
(allright lets go!)

And the battle’s just begun
There’s many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart

Sunday, bloody sunday
Sunday, bloody sunday

How long...
How long must we sing this song?
How long? how long...

’cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...
Tonight...

Sunday, bloody sunday (tonight)
Tonight
Sunday, bloody sunday (tonight)
(come get some!)

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Wipe your tears away
I wipe your tears away
(sunday, bloody sunday)
I wipe your blood shot eyes
(sunday, bloody sunday)

Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday, bloody sunday)
Sunday, bloody sunday (sunday, bloody sunday)
(here I come!)

And it’s true we are immune
When fact is fiction and tv reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die

The real battle yet begun (sunday, bloody sunday)
To claim the victory jesus won (sunday, bloody sunday)
On...

Sunday bloody sunday
Sunday bloody sunday...
The song is about a march for an end to the troubles in Northern Ireland. The marchers first came under fire from the IRA terrorists and then from the Police and British Army when the terrorists used them to shield themselves. It happened 32 years ago today.

Note of course that the western media blamed the police and the army for the deaths of the unarmed marchers, when The terrorists were the ones who started the killing.

The sickening part being that HBO/Cinemax/Showtime have been showing everything from "Micheal Collins", to "The Devil's Own", to "Blown Away", to "The Night Fighters", to "The Crying Game"

grr.

Is the IRA as active today as it once was ? I lived in Galway for over a year and never saw any signs of IRA related acitivies. Heck most Irish people speak english, the language of the British, instead of Gallic. It was surprising to me as I expected that the IRA would be very active in the Republic of Ireland like PLO in Palestine.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

I was in Ulster (downpatrick? down-something i forget) in '82. we were only in the North for a day to visit some cousin. I do remeber being scared to fucking death. the graffita, the APC's guarding Churches. Supposely i have some distant cousins who were involved in some seedy shit and went to jail. Not only that, people we stayed with in Galway were raided by the Garda for having a basement full of AR-15's and AK-47's not long after we went home. Some craaaaaazy shit.

It's sad, when i was a kid, all i ever heard from my grandparents (who were immigrants) was bitching about those 'godddamn British' or the 'protestant bastards'. Granted Britian was by no means innocent, but still, the IRA were some sick fucks. It's a good thing that later my grandparents never found out i dated a girl who's family was from Ulster and her father (supposedly) was mobbed up with the UVF before they immigrated.

 The whole thing is just ridiculous. I mean, come on, if Catholics and Protestants really had to kill each other like that I'd be long dead, as I'm a Protestant living in an area where the population is literally 98% Catholic. Instead I work for the abbey, have the Catholic Church paying my bills (through my paycheck), and generally have a grand old time.

I hear that if you're in Ireland and it is made clear that you're American, you're perfectly safe from the IRA, whether or not you're Catholic or Protestant. That true?

nobody every bothered us. But then again so much gun money flowed to both sides from the States, no one wanted to jeopardize that. Also, even in the peak of The Troubles the Republic of Ireland (the south) was quiet. Even the North wasn't the violent wasteland portrayed in the American media. Just don't go during Marching Season.

They raise too much of their funds here. Can't afford to alienate the Irish American population. :x

since Sept. 11th , the river of American money dried up. The few Americans that still supported the IRA learned what it felt like to be on the receiving end of a terrorist attack.

Apparently (though I'll admit now this is pure hearsay) a surprisingly large portion of the Irish in the Republic consider the IRA just as barmy as the British do. Northern Ireland's supposed to be a real ****hole though, especially the big cities.
