Anyway, what technology have you been following recently?

My personal favorites are currently carbon nanotubes, and hydrogen as a power source. If I had more time, I'd divulge recent advances for them, but...I don't.

Yesterday I was experimenting with IDE RAID on my home PC. We built two homemade file servers at work using this technology to save money, but the other guy in my department put them together. This was my first time to get a chance to check it out.

I made a stripe set with 2 30GB drives and it does provide a modest performance boost for a very reasonable price. The controller was built into the motherboard. For me personally, its nice to find a solution that gets the job done, whether its high tech or low tech.

For example, even though I take care of laptops and desktops for a living, I dont carry around a Palm Pilot like many people here in Silicon Valley. I carry around one of those Composition Notebooks and a pencil. Requires no batteries, doesnt break if I drop it, and its no sweat if I loose it. At the end of the day I usually transfer any relevant notes into our ticket system if needed.

Light-emitting polymers and other controllable luminescent material technologies that may someday allow us to make low-power consumption, flexible and flat display screens.

Imagine rolling up a giant-screen TV like a poster and tucking it under your arm. Imagine all of the places where you could put display units once freed from the bulk and power consumption of LCD (never mind CRT) technology.

That would be pretty freakin awesome to see, the light-emitting polymers and such. Personally, for the ultimate cool factor, I'd go for the computers on Deus Ex (Most awesome 1st Person Shooter ever...Better than Half-Life in my opinion). The actual computer is about the size of a laptop, though the monitor(s?) look like they could be constructed of nanotubes with silicon intersections (There is a problem with nanotubes, only one though: They have difficulty bending at the higher acute angles, in the 45-90 degree area), with the actual screen being the polymer described by the great Master Wong.
