Asteroid

I think I read somewhere (Scientific American?) that there is a 1:1000000 chance of an asteroid hitting the earth in 2015. Hmm better chance then winning the lottery if you only bought 1 ticket.

All the more reason for research towards 200GT TLs, right?

Yes that way even if the asteroid misses, we can still wipe out much of earths surface life ourselves on a scale never possible with thermonuclear weapons. This will aid the cleansing greatly.

Damn right. It's time to stop relying on natural disasters for extinction-level events; they're just not reliable.

How big is this asteroid? Cuase the earth is constantly being hit by tiny asteroids. I'm full of tinier asteroids. ... Time to go to bed.

I say we use every concept for deflecting an asteroid at the same time. Use lasers, nukes, solar sails, Orion rockets, and KE weapons, and pray that they don't cancel each other out and sent the asteroid toward us faster.

I better save up for that space shuttle trip... I'll stay in space for a few centuries, until all the effects of the asteroid are gone and bacteria can live again, and land.

It would be fun seeing us throwing everything we had at the asteroid and having them all cancel each other out :)

I've heard that it will hit in 2019 and is around 2 km wide. But I'm not sure. However, there is a margin of error of about a billion miles either side, so it's by no means certain.

Which is good.

I heard about the 2019 one. I think it will hit with a teraton of force, if it hits. It's not that bad. I mean, it could hit with a petaton of force, or even an exaton! And, since it's not that big, it could be moved or destroyed easier than, say, a 20km wide asteroid.
