Bungie Reveals HALO 2 Release date!

Post by Icehawk »

While it pains me to have to wait till the fall (I personally figured it would be out by June at the latest :( ), at least now we have a confirmed timeframe that we can expect it and not just a "done when its done" stance.

When i read about this i was pissed off to no end. First there was the idea that it would come out by last December, then it was the first quarter of 2004, then i heard that some Microsoft official had stated a release date in April and now its goddamn fall!!

The only good thing now is that atleast it wont be going any further than that, but im still pissed off.

Oh well, atleast there will be a load of good games coming on fall then. Dawn of War, SW:Battlefront and Halo 2.

I am glad they pushed it back. I have no money and if it comes out and i can't play it i am going to really pissed. This gives me some time to save money. BTW the more they push it back the more crap they put into it so it is a win win situation for me. Just think it the Multi player we can play has the covenant!!!

I say to let them take all the time they need rather than put out a crappy product. Same reason I like Blizzard's stuff. Warcraft 3 took much longer than anticipated, but it was worth it, at least according to the beta testers. I'd rather get a good game later than a piece of shit now.

OK, what I don't understand here is what they're doing with all this time. Does the game require a huge amount of coding instead of just continuing the story and adding a few new weapons or vehicles?

It's not like a PC game where they start adding all kinds of new features or a super-powerful graphics engine thanks to ever-changing hardware: the X-Box has the exact same hardware it had when Halo 1 came out.

It's a totally new graphics engine. I don't really understand it myself, but as a console gets older, developers figure out how to squeeze more and more performance out of the same hardware.

Screenshots look really nice. Here's hoping for PC vs. XBOX multiplayer (although there would have to be XBOX-only servers too for people who don't like getting assraped by the unstoppable keyboard+mouse).

The 8 minute demonstration at E3 was awesome. :D But it still had its flaws. (If anyone wants it, I've got the file. It took me a while to find a site that didn't have a screwed up version.)

It's a completely new graphics engine. They've probably played with the physics engine, as well. I doubt they were using the XBox to its full potential the first time around (though the game tended to skip in high-action, split-screen multiplayer scenes).

Yes, but you'd be surprised at how much power can be squeezed out of a console, however aged the hardware may be. That's why a white-box PC built to as closely as possible to the XBox's specs and an actual XBox aren't equivalent hardware, and also why the PC version of the XBox requires just a bit more than a 733 MHz PIII. :)

I saw a link on the xbox ign forums to some news website talking about upcoming games and they mentioned Halo 2 would have something like 20,000 lines of dialogue in it  Of course, alot of that will probably be just random stuff coming from marines and other non playable characters as you go through the game, but still, Halo 1 apparently only had about 6000 lines of dialogue and even that was still pretty amazing.

EDIT: HERE's the link to the 20,000 lines of dialogue article.

20000 lines is still cool, that background chatter adds a little something to the game for me. I loved to hear the marine's chatter. OH MY GOD! YOU KILLED HIM! YOU WANT SOME OF THIS?! et al. (I love et al.) Only problem is, if bungie just turns out a Halo 1 clone with spiffed up graphics after keeping people's hopes up for two years, they're going to absolutely fucking tank. MY thoughts are that something spectacular awaits us, friends. Pardon me, someone just said the H word again, BRB

So is this going to be a simultaneous PC/XBOX launch or is it going to be another 2 year wait for the PC gamers?

Xbox only at the moment. Bungie has said a PC release is a possibility but nothing concrete is being done. Microsoft is probably going to try and keep Halo 2 an Xbox exclusive as long as possible to max out the sales.

Which is fucking stupid. $50 is $50. While Halo was used to launch the X-Box, Halo 2 will not increase sales. If Microsoft was smart they would do a near similtaneous release to maximize profits.

Halo sold 3 million for X-Box and a pathetic 500K on PC. GTA3 sold like 4-5 million PS2 and another 2-3 million PC. If Microsoft was smart they would realize releasing soon on PC would maximize their profits tremendously.

Microsoft isn't interesting in maximizing profits, they are interested in creating an Xbox install base and the Halo series is the biggest gun they have in that initiative. Halo 2 will quite likely surpass even Halo in quality so it could still ship a number of systems to those that see it as a must have game. The Xbox hasn't reached near saturation levels yet.

Actually, it's rather a lot like that.

Only rather than hoping everyone's bought a really expensive new toy to play it on, they actually have to get better at programming the system.

Halo 2 has massively increased polycount, the AI's completely overhauled, all the lighting and shadowing is redone, so that the game starts looking something like This

(although, obviously, that's a direct framebuffer grab, and is therefore at a higher resolution then the final display)
