Is that going to be very economically viable?

Does Disney get to keep the computer work Pixar has done on those projects?

Pixar does do a lot of reuse, if Disney has to start from scratch on them, it might not be worth it.

Or, Disney could just put out features based on those movies but animated in traditional Disney fashion.

There's already a Buzz Lightyear of Starcommand cartoon so why not?

One film executive suggested that Mr. Jobs could now be considered a candidate to run Disney if indeed Mr. Eisner ever left.
But Disney can begin creating sequels to all of Pixar's films, something it could not do under its current arrangement and is almost certain to exploit.

:wtf: Does that mean we're going to start getting a bunch of direct to video knock-offs of the Pixar movies? How exactly is Disney going to do the computer animation if Pixar isn't involved?
Hire another one?
Going to be hard when DreamWorks SKG actively opposes Diznee and Fox Animation along with Square Pictures died after Titan A.E. and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within respectively.

I can't think of any other US company big enough right now.

There are smaller firms that have talent. You just have to go out looking for them.

Fathom Studios' stuff looks interesting. I can imagine how cool it would be if they had more money.

Maybe. I don't know if it would work very well if you were doing a direct sequel though.

I rather liked Lilo & Stitch, though that was the first good one in years, in my opinion.

Just to correct you but Square Pictures isn't exactly dead from what I understand. They worked on the "Final Flight of the Osiris" short for the Animatrix and I believe that they are also working on Final Fantasy: Advent Children. The likelyhood of them getting back into movies seems low unless they receive a decent funding deal from a major studio (their deal with Columbia was straight distribution only) but they still exist.

EDIT: Also, didn't Disney have an in-house CG animation studio that did the film Dinosaur? From a technical perspective at least it seems that they can compete.

Paul Verhoeven wanted to do that. He wanted to have the ending one big Armageddon like carnage scene with dinosaurs getting vaped left and right.

The Secret Lab?

Yeah, they shut that down several years ago.

A shame. The animation that they did for Dinosaur was leagues beyond the stuff Pixar has done. Although I imagine that it was a fair bit more expensive as well.
