There's an 8 Month waiting period for finding a job here in New Orleans. It's Mardi Gras Turista Season, too, so that should tell you something. Worse: that includes McJobs too! Somehow I get the feeling we'll see Hooverville if this damn stagflation (economy stinks yet prices go up explosively anyway) keeps up...

I live in one of Ohio's poorest counties. I've been looking for a job for months and havn't found anything, and "anything" also includes fast food. When they do hire, and it's not often, they have thousands of applications backlogged. Worse, our only major local business, Mill's Pride, is rumoured to go out of business in a few years, if that.

The situation is so bad, I've applied to places up in Dayton which is two hours away.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

My area is just as bad. It is amazing how strongly the housing market is holding up considering how few companies are hiring and how wages have not kept pace.

Yesterday on the radio they said to afford the median prices home you have to be making $124,000 / year. WTF!

I've been without a permanent job since Oct 2002. I am working but Im a temp. Its been a rough, unhappy time, I so wish I had never bought my condo when I did. I would have had lots of money to travel around and even go to school if I wanted.

Why is that so suprising? It appears that's a stock brokerage which if you haven't noticed has taken repeated hits.

And of course as theski pointed out, the tech revolution went bust and is still a black hole.

Washington Mutual is a bank and mortgage company. An industry Chardok is very familar with.

If the housing market in the US starts to deflate, it can have really dire consequences for all. Less equity means less home improvement projects, that means less consupmtion at places like Home Depot, etc.

They just laid off about 100 people here in Jacksonville (They were informed yesterday). Their last day will be march 31st. I'm safe until at least July, they may not get rid of the callcenter here at all, but *ugh*. kinda hit close to home. Time to update the old resume', just in case.

Hopefully everything will be okay. Im just starting to recover from my layoff. The shitty thing is, some of the biggest assholes who got the axe the same day as me found work literally weeks later. Some of the nicest folks are still unemployed.

I passed on a job in the mortgage industry this summer, because I was afraid lay offs were around the corner. I think I made a right move for once.

My dad works for the US Department of Energy. The research site employs about 85 people. A few weeks ago, 83 of them received notice that their jobs might go to independant contractors. So now they're all holding their breaths that some damned fool doesn't decide to contract everything, which in the past has about doubled the total cost of work. Oh, but that's not important, cause we're shrinking government!

Contracting out work often costs more in the long run, but in the short run it looks good on the books. I'll never do contractor work again unless it pays a lot. Im going to get reamed on taxes.

Actually, it will look bad even on the books if you look much at all. Federal govt employees don't get paid shit.

Only a cursory glance that saw federal payrolls decreasing wuold suggest any savings.

Update, 205 people laid off, I'm not affected, and the callcenter here remains an integral part of of the business model. *whew*

Actually I know some people on DOE payroll, they far exceed corporate pay now days. There are too many people in the corporate world looking for work so wages are depressed. You know its bad when you get both better benefits and wages as a govt employee.

Wow, what section of the DOE? My dad is a metallurgical engineer and he's making about $50K/yr plus shitty benefits.

Some of programs at Lawrence Livermore, but you have to remember that the wages are adjusted for local cost of living. 50K here is just barely enough to rent a 2 bedroom apt.
