Agree with this 100%. Spanking a teenager is just wrong on so many levels (not the least of which is the mental picture of a father spanking his 16 year old daughter...). Spanking a child under 2 could cause physical damage if your not careful.Supreme Court Upholds Parents' Right to Spank

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian parents can continue to spank their children, but only if they are not infants or teens, the Supreme Court ruled on Friday.
The court said it would be more harmful to families to turn parents into criminals for applying reasonable force to discipline children from two until their teen years.
But the high court left parents open to criminal sanctions for using force outside those ages. It also said the force used must be reasonable, and striking a child with objects or slapping the head was not permitted.
Also, using belts or head shots is just wrong period. Sorry, that's assault.
Good. The court also upheld teachers' rights to remove a child from a classroom or to secure compliance.
Only if done in public. However, I think spanking a kid in public is not needed if the child has peen properly raised to begin withThe case, which pitted conservative groups against those advocating an end to corporal punishment, saw the top court reject a constitutional challenge that said children's dignity was threatened by physical discipline.
Wow, judges are making more sense the politicians and political activisits, who'd have though it"Introducing the criminal law into children's families and educational environments in such circumstances would harm children more than help them," Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin wrote for the 6-2 majority. A ninth judge had a split opinion.
Depending on the level of corporal punishment, I agree with letting them go. However, that's a big depending."The force permitted is limited and must be set against the reality of a child's mother or father being charged and pulled into the criminal justice system, with its attendant rupture of the family setting, or a teacher being detained pending bail, with the inevitable harm to the child's crucial educative setting," McLachlin wrote.
The case did not center on any specific incident, but the issue of spanking hit the news in Ontario in 2001 when social workers seized seven children from a conservative evangelical family that used corporal punishment.
Off course they are. Part of the reason is so they can nail more parent to the wall and therefore get more funding. The Problem with CAS societies is some of the workers have never been parents, others should not be/have been parents, and others are there to get back at all parents for what they went through as children. The children were later returned home and the parents escaped criminal penalties because of the law that allows spanking, but the Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies joined in asking for the section to be struck down.
Translation: Damn it, they didn't give in completely"Parents can breathe a sigh of relief that they will not be criminalized for lovingly disciplining their children," Michael Martens said for Focus on the Family, one of the groups that made arguments before the court.
Cheryl Milne, the lawyer for Canadian Foundation for Children, Youth and the Law, which had challenged the spanking law, said the court had given a mixed message.
"I'm heartened by the court's attempts to narrow the defense," she told reporters. "What I'm concerned with overall is that it's still OK to hit children."
Wouldn't it be better to lobby for mandatory child education courses? The Child Welfare League of Canada, which argues that spanking leads to abuse, said it would continue to lobby Parliament for a ban.
GOODHowever, repeated attempts have failed in the past and polls have shown 70 percent to 80 percent of the public would oppose a spanking ban.
Very true. I've seen kids with all the toys in the world not care when they were sent to there room without anything to do there. However, slap them twice on the ass, they get the ideaPaula Whaley, a mother who was at the court for the decision, said she tries time-outs and talk, but sometimes spanking is more effective.
"Some kids respond better to physical corporal punishment," she said.
Partially agree. However, it is up to the government to decide what is going to far.Standing with her husband and 13-year-old daughter -- whom she said they no longer spank -- she said those decisions should be up to parents and not the government.
Before anyone wonders about my raising, I've been spanked twice by my parents, once by a babysitter, and once by my grandfather.
the times by family, twice i deserved it, and the first time ever it was my dad giving me a wap on the ass when I was 3 and nearly running out into traffic. he followed it up with 'if you think that hurt, a car hitting you would hurt lots more.' The other two times, lets just say my sister and my fist are involved.
The babysitter one, I got the belt. The only reason the belter wasn't killed by my father is because they didn't find out until the next day. My parents told the babysitter (it was her boyfriend that did it) if he ever came near us again under any circumstances, he'd be in jail. The babysitter also lost her job.
The only reason they didn't file charges is that it was another 'sister and fist' incident.
(for those worried that i might have beat my sister up alot, that's not the case. First incident was over a tricycle in grade 1 and her getting hurt was an accident, next one was around Grade 5, next one was in Grade 6 and I ended up in a BAC class. After that, my sister learned how to kick and fight back, and started taking swings at me when mad. The joys of having a sister two years younger then you that was stronger then most boys her age...)
