BBC Report: North Korea tests CW on prisoners and kids

The wonders of the worker's Paradise

Can somebody please tell me why President Bush, Britiain, Japan, and Australia should not be allowed to invade North Korea? Would not East Asia as a whole be a safer region with Kim Jon-ill out. Would not the people of North Korea be grateful that we have liberated the nation from over 50 years of Stalinist dictatorship and genocide?

Do you realize how many people would die in such an operation? Do you realize NK has artillery pieces deployed that could hit Seoul right now if they wanted to? Do you realize that North Korea is the most heavily defended nation per square mile in the world?

Many, many, many people would die, and South Korea getting nailed as it most likely would be would probably not help the world's economy. And god help us all if they really do have nukes they can deploy.

War with N. Korea scares me... and unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if Bush decided to try it if he gets reelected.

I don't see why we didn't invade them years ago, we could give the land to South Korea, they'd love the western world then.

Uraniun: Even more reason to go NOW, before they decide to start a war themselves when they're ready to use nuclear weapons.

Good god! I am soooo glad I am not over there anymore. And yes, a war with them would scare me.

Better to let the place self-destruct of it's own accord than waste untold number of lives to hasten it. North Korea won't attain victory with or without nuclear weapons.

You pray that they self destruct. Didn't you see the new Bond movie though? They have a giant space satellite ready to blast us to bits! :P

I wouldn't count on it. Despite their differences, the South Korean's were extremely upset about Bush's "Axis of Evil" speach and most of them seem to be hoping for an eventual diplomatic reunification of the two nations (of course this is a pipe dream, but that's what they want).

See... a couple years ago there was this thing that happened there called the "Korean War." During the fighting, the US invaded North Korea. Then along came North Korea's big brother, China, which sent North Korea lots of troops and airplanes to make the Americans stop. Lots of people died. Then they decided to stop fighting. By the time China told NK to fuck off, again, NK had already succeeded in strengthening its military and massively increasing its defenses, so that an invasion would be too costly to seriously consider during the Cold War, when US troops were needed elsewhere. Then it became too politically inexpedient to invade NK, because of the serious casualties such an operation would entail. That was that, and here we are.

I suppose, but look at the situation. South Korea has been sucking off the Golden Tit of United States military protection for so long, that they take their security for granted. I think they also feel some sort of kinship with the North Koreans, despite the fact that they are constantly in danger from them.

I'm talking to my Korean friend on IM right now about this, and he made the analogy of the United States during the Civil War. Despite the war and all the differences, we still felt a certain brotherhood with the South, which he says is exactly how South Koreans feel about North Korea.

Your friend is a moron. The South had to be retaken because it was an illegal secessionist movement--we fucking reconquered them and abolished their way of life! The North crushed the South to validate the ascendancy of the Federal Government. How is that shit comparable to the diplomatic cocksucking to a genocidal manaic performed by the S. Koreans?

Woah, hold on there Sparky! I didn't say that they are comparable, and neither did he. He simply said that that was the mentality of those in South Korea (one he does not share btw). Aparently they seem to believe that there is a certain brotherhood between the people of both nations that trancends the events of the past few decades.

Well, on the plus side if it had to happen, we could get going faster since we'd need no new declaration of war from Congress. The old one is still legally in full force. Just nothing being done about it. Yet.

Considering the amount of resources and lives that would be spent on the operation, the President would be fighitng a PR war with the American people rather than Congress.

Well, Germany reunified, as well. And that was considered a pipe dream mere years before it actually happened.
Needless to say, many Koreans look to Germany as a example of reunification being possible.

I think this calls for a nice assassination mission on the North Korean leadership.

Or failing that, a massive, all out aerial bombardment by anyone that can get planes withing reach. And when I mean massive, I mean MASSIVE.

How big is the Chinese airforce anyway?

Quite large, but only the Su-30MKK force (104 aircraft) has credible strike capability- though North Korea has such primitive air defense, they could probably get their old H-6 bombers in on the act and not take too many losses.

North Koreans are not starving to death. They're not toiling away in gulags. Just look, they're quite happy!

NK picks up your planes and gives the order to commence artillery bombardment. Seoul is levelled and untold death and destruction is wreaked before your first bombs hit. Congratulations.

No. I don't think Kim Jong Il or his buddies are that suicidal. We have deterrant. The Korean situation demands that we exhaust all possibilities before a military confrontation, because war with North Korea will be very, very costly.

If the opening weeks to this were half as bad as the ones to the Korean War then the public outcry would be intense. There's no way it'd go smooth like Iraq II, this would be very much a hands on full blown invasion and no amount of high-tech equipment will keep casualties within the limits the public sees as acceptable.

You can't be scared by that. You need to be more scared by what such a person would do if he ever gets real striking power......
