NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PLANNING MEETING TO DEFEAT THE NEW 187
Monday, February 2, 7:00 PM, UC-Berkeley campus, Rm. 123 Wheeler Hall
The racist, anti-immigrant group Save Our State (SOS) has begun a
signature gathering campaign to
place a new Proposition 187 initiative on the California November 2004
ballot. They have until
April 29 to gather the required signatures. All supporters of equality
and immigrant rights,
Chicana/o, Latina/o, black, Asian, Arab, and white must build a public
campaign to STOP THIS
RACIST INITIATIVE BEFORE IT HAS A CHANCE TO GET ON THE BALLOT.
If this initiative passes, it would place a constitutional ban on the
right of undocumented
immigrants in California to qualify for drivers' licenses, or to
receive any state or locally
funded health care or social services beyond the federally required
minimum of emergency room care
and K-12 education. Those who provide health care and social services
would be required, by law,
to report any undocumented immigrant who attempts to receive services
such as pre-natal care to
the INS. To not do so would be a criminal offense punishable by a
misdemeanor citation. This
initiative campaign would stir up increased racist attacks and
harassment of all Chicana/o,
Latina/o people and as well as immigrants in California, and must be
stopped. Denying public
education to undocumented immigrants is left out of this initiative,
but if the initiative passes,
SOS wants to follow it up with lawsuits against the public schools. We
must act now to show that
CALIFORNIA IS NOT THE PLACE TO ATTACK IMMIGRANTS' RIGHTS.
A new independent civil rights movement has emerged in response to a
set of national attacks on
affirmative action and all the gains made toward integration and
equality won by the first civil
rights movement of the 1950's and 60's. We can defeat the attacks on
immigrants' rights if we
build the power of this new movement. On April 1st 2003, the movement
stepped onto the national
scene, marched 50,000 strong at the U.S. Supreme Court, and succeeded
in getting the use of
affirmative action upheld. All active positive measures to offset the
racist and sexist inequality
in our country were defended with this victory. Next, a massive public
campaign in California
defeated Proposition 54, which would have banned the collection of data
on racial inequality. It
has been proven, IF WE FIGHT WE CAN WIN!
So unless I'm missing something here, all this proposition would do is limit how much access to government money illegal immigrants have. Is there some racist undertone I'm missing here?
