Its a situation where containment works best.
N. Korea is unlikely to start anything, as it knows it'll be smashed if it does. On the other hand, if anyone attacks it, places like Seoul will be devestated in retaliation.

Unfortunate for those that live there, but theres nothing that can realistically be done just now.

The South Korean military estimated that 50 SCUD's armed with nerve gas (North Korea has ample gas and ten times more SCUDs plus other missiles) striking Seoul would kill 3.8 million people.

Now that you know that, does anyone still advocate a military attack on the North? That is the response it would bring.

I'm curious SS, how good are South Korea's anti-missile systems? Are they as good as those deployed in Israel? Would they put a dent in any such attack?

Probably, but even one getting through means hundreds of thousands of dead civilians.

South Korea has a number of Patriot batteries, however I don't believe they've bought PAC-3 into service yet, and in any case they couldn't come close to stopping a North Korean missile attack, there are simply too many areas which must be covered.

As for Israel, they really have nothing exceptional. Only a few Arrow units are operational and there Patriots are also few in number and designed to stop aircraft not missiles.

Couldn't they just evacuate the south korean cities before attacking? Alternatively, nuke the absolute crap out of them all at once.

Come on Rye, you don't see the political ramifications in conducting an unprovoked nuclear first stike?

Come on now Rye, even extreme right-wing madmen like myself don't want to see millions of North Koreans get vaporized in a nuclear strike.

You're joking, right? Evacuate an entire fucking country?

To where? How? How long would it take? Who will pay for it?

Dumbest idea ever.

...except that one.

That's the most retarded idea I've heard today. South Korea's population is 83% urban; there capital Seoul holds some 20% of the entire national population. Where the hell would you move those people? How would you disperse them enough that they wouldn't just present another huge NBC warfare target? They'd be far worse off even if it where possibul, a tent offers far less protection from a rain of nerve gas then a large building, at least then you can seal off a room with tape and hope for the best. And then theres the matter of Japan, a nation which is 78% urban and also a likely target.
Alternatively, nuke the absolute crap out of them all at once.
My what a great idea. Lets use a bunch of nuclear bombs and explode them in dirty fallout producing ground bursts (as would be required to knock out North Koreas hardened NBC facilities) while South Korea and Japan are downwind. Horary, we've irradiated the two nations most at risk from the North Korean arsenal we wanted to destroy.

You need to be more scared by what such a person would do if he ever gets real striking power......

Being proactive about such things is important in todays world....
North Korea might be brazen, foolhardy even, but they're not suicidal enough to launch a missile attack against the U.S. or it's allies. That would certainly put an end to their reign, as the world would surely call for a swift change of regime to make sure they never have the opportunity to repeat their mistake.

Let's put it this way. If we continue our current policies and contain North Korea, a lot of people might die should the N. Korean leaders go batshit insane and actually strike first. If we go to war with them, a lot of people will die. Let's try containment, mmkay? It worked just fine with the Soviets.
