Ah, the joys of living in political monopoly(Utah)
It's an election year in my state(Utah), and naturally, the overwhelmingly Republican legislature is grandstanding like a bunch of peacocks competing for mates.
For example, while there are NO bills on what is probably our biggest issue- reforming the education system- there are five bills - five - on anti-abortion, including:
Two bills banning partial-birth abortion and the public funding of abortion- significant because they removed a clause in the already present ban that would allow a partial birth in case a woman's life was endangered;
3. A resolution condemning Roe vs Wade
4. Plan to sell "Choose Life" license plates to finance adoption agencies;
5. No public funding to agencies such as Planned Parenthood that might possibly recommend abortion.
Add these onto our currently popular anti-UN resolution, calling for the United States to "Respectfully but firmly" withdraw from the UN, and you get the picture.

I don't think any pro-abortioners are sweating bullets about whether or not Utah supports Planned Parenthood.

Living in Utah is frustrating sometimes because the Mormon church forces its ideals on everyone, however, Utah is many things but a barren hellhole it is not.Andrew J. wrote:As if anyone else in the country gives a damn what anyone in that barren, repressed hellhole thinks anyway.Guardsman Bass wrote:3. Hey! Don't insult my home state- I like it here. Besides, the mormons aren't exactly repressive- most of the ones I know are trying NOT to act overly religious, regardless of what they are being told. Its just I'd like to seen some VARIETY in our state government..

The Mormons you know may not be overtly religious, but are they voting for this bullshit? If they are, then your wish for less homogeneous state government will not be answered.

Utah's only lake is full of undrinkable water, and it's filled with stupid fundies, which demonstrates to me barrenness and hellholeness, respectively.Kamakazie Sith wrote:Living in Utah is frustrating sometimes because the Mormon church forces its ideals on everyone, however, Utah is many things but a barren hellhole it is not.Andrew J. wrote:As if anyone else in the country gives a damn what anyone in that barren, repressed hellhole thinks anyway.Guardsman Bass wrote:3. You must be thinking of the only lake worth mentioning, Great Salt Lake. However, Utah has many lakes. It seems to me like you have to deal with fundies no matter where you live, and really life isn't that bad here. We all still manage to have fun and people like myself keep Utah exciting with parties, sex, and rock n roll.Andrew J. wrote:Utah's only lake is full of undrinkable water, and it's filled with stupid fundies, which demonstrates to me barrenness and hellholeness, respectively.Kamakazie Sith wrote:Living in Utah is frustrating sometimes because the Mormon church forces its ideals on everyone, however, Utah is many things but a barren hellhole it is not.Andrew J. wrote: As if anyone else in the country gives a damn what anyone in that barren, repressed hellhole thinks anyway.

Yeah, well having 75% of the legislature controlled by the Democrats is no fucking picknic either. The goddamn unions (see:mafia) run the state with an iron fist. Three senior leaders were forced to resign in disgrace in the past six months becuase they were bought off by CVS and GTECH. AND GET THIS... One of the remaining party leaders is implicated in the physical shaking down of a non union shipping company operating at the Port of Providence. Political monopolies suck regarless of what party is in control.

I thought the Mormons were very much the dominate force in Utah politics and it's not a good thing to be non-Mormon in most parts of Utah if you want to run for office or have a business.Guardsman Bass wrote:Hey! 1)Of course there is not bills on education reform. You really can't raise the property tax much more with out an all out revolt nor can you even dream of doing away with the free ride the hoards....I mean Mormon families enjoy with their tax break on 16 kids.Guardsman Bass wrote:It's an election year in my state(Utah), and naturally, the overwhelmingly Republican legislature is grandstanding like a bunch of peacocks competing for mates.

2)Meh, I happen to be either a fence sitter or slightly on the side of that in that I'm against so-called partial birth abortion.
3)Thats just dumb.
4)Bah.
5)Pretty much agree to this too, atleast until they're required to notify me before they perform surgery on my kid.
6)I was under the impression that the Speaker took this stupid shit off the agenda. Even he thought it was a total waste of time.
There will probably be a total waste of time on 'keep guns out of schools and churches' that usualy sucks up alot of time on a totally NON-ISSUE.

It's not a good thing only in the sense that your ideals will clash with theirs but I've never seen the local Mormon community try and run anyone out of business. Take Wingers for example, the local Mormon community protested that a Wingers was going to be built in N. Ogden because Wingers serves beer, they will overruled and that Wingers is flourishing.Gil Hamilton wrote:I thought the Mormons were very much the dominate force in Utah politics and it's not a good thing to be non-Mormon in most parts of Utah if you want to run for office or have a business.Guardsman Bass wrote:Hey! I didn't realize Utah was so ass backward.
You need to drop a JDAM right into the Temple and legislature while in-session.

The Mormons are about as bad as you get. Did you know they have to wear absurd "undergarments" all the time, even during sex (which covers up the woman's ass and tits, IIRC).Darth Wong wrote:The Mormons you know may not be overtly religious, but are they voting for this bullshit? Plus, the garmies have **secret sacred ancient coughMasoniccough symbols** on them that no one is supposed to know about. Supposedly because of those they protect the wearers from fire, gunshots, and anything else which should kill someone wearing cotton body condoms. There are many legends that circulate around the fundie Mormons about how somebody died in a fire but the garmies and the skin underneath were untouched, and how the body condoms stop various things from penetrating. Really sad stuff.Illuminatus Primus wrote:The Mormons are about as bad as you get. If you can break through the wall of brain washing, they'll likely to tear your clothes off and fuck you like a maniac. Sure, by morning their training and conditioning might kick back in and she'll feel guilty as hell, but at that point, its her problem and not mine, mine was a sore member.
Seriously though, I have a couple friends and even a brother going through such nonsence. Dating girls that are mormon and getting to a point in the relationship where sex is envolved. Then at some point the girl starts getting distant because she's ashamed of the sex she has done. Some times it goes far enough that they'll blame the partner for 'talking them into it' or what ever.
