Two of the architects of the Iraq war, United States President George W Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, are among nominees for the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize.

Nominations for the prestigious award close tomorrow.

After sending thousands of soldiers to war and failing to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Mr Bush and Mr Blair have been put forward to receive the Nobel peace prize.

They were nominated by Jan Simonsen, an independent member of Norway's Parliament who says the pair got rid of a dictator and made the world safer.

"Bush and Blair definitely still deserve it," he said.

"Even though they haven't found those weapons they got rid of a dictator and made the world more safe. They got rid of a madman."

Saddam's alleged weapons of mass destruction were a main justification for the war.

Nobel watchers say neither Mr Bush nor Mr Blair has much chance of winning.

Other nominees are varied and include: Pope John Paul II; the European Union to mark its expansion to include former East bloc states; the Salvation Army; former Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler; former Czech president Vaclav Havel; former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic; and Chinese dissidents.

The 2003 prize went to Iranian human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi from a record field of 165 nominees.

The prize winner is announced in October.

Hell, I bet if he had won, he wouldn't have been nearly as bitter and WWII could have been avoided entirely.

Well, Bush and Blair did depose a dictator that had killed thousands of the people of his country, and through that act caused countries like Libya and Iran to open up. That's gotta count for something.

If there was ever any compelling evidence for the cluster fuck and political bullshit rampant in the nobel committee this is it. And it makes me happy to see it.

Question: What do Bush, Blair, the Pope and Adolf Hitler have in common?
Answer: They have all been nominated for the 2004 Nobel peace prize.

Seeing as how even good-old Adolf was nominated I wouldn't make too much of this.

Ah, come on. As propaganda goes, its pretty good.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Wasn't Bush nominated in 2002 and 2003 as well? I'm near certain of the latter anyway.

Yes, he was nominated last year. And he lost last year too, but hopefully I didn't need to add that.

Iran was already opening up. They offered to send us aid after September 11, and Bush essentially told them to fuck off by calling them part of the "Axis of Evil." I will give him Libya, though even Muammar Qaddafi had been lightening up the last few years, making overtures through third parties and turning over terrorists that he had been harboring.

And if it's good to attack dictators who kill large numbers of their own people, when does the China invasion begin?

Dont you know? We only invade small countries with near non-existant militaries that cant defend themselves. That way, the people in power can use "wartime leadership" as a political boost, while not having to deal with the nasty side effects of a real war

You know... stuff like this, frm our last declared war. Granted, this war was completely justified, but I am sure you will see why a sitting president doesnt really want to attack a country that can actually inflict casualties. Does the term "Political suicide" ring a bell?
