The Dark wrote:Iran was already opening up. They offered to send us aid after September 11, and Bush essentially told them to fuck off by calling them part of the "Axis of Evil." I will give him Libya, though even Muammar Qaddafi had been lightening up the last few years, making overtures through third parties and turning over terrorists that he had been harboring.

And if it's good to attack dictators who kill large numbers of their own people, when does the China invasion begin?
See, China has this little thing called 'nu-cle-ar weapons'. Ring a bell?

And then there's the fact that day by day China is becoming more and more democratic and cleaning up their human rights record.

As for Iran, I don't recall them ever offering us aid. In fact, weren't they one of the nations with the people dancing in the streets? :?

Oh, how careless of me, I forgot pictures of Vietnam as well...*curses lack of edit button* This is from the last time we had a prolonged "war"... Teaches the politicians that it isnt the cause that really matters(fighting human rights violations), but how many points they can gain in an election year(yes I am bitter)

Might I ask what the point of posting this up is, Alyrium?

We have to weight the consequences vs. the benefits. In Iraq, we have fought a war with a comparitively low number of casualties. To many, yes, but comparitively low.

Would you really expect us to go invade North Korea right now? The casualties on both sides would be immense, everybody knows that.

But I'm just wondring what you're trying to prove, everyone realizes that it'd be political suicide to attack another major power.

Yeah, Westmoreland sure made those monks light themselves up, which occured before major American intervention even.

Appeals to emotion, especially with your apparent historical ignorance are not productive.

I am simply saying that having casualties at all is political suicide. We dot like graphic images of what a real war is like. Just look at us... we are going nuts for a few hundred casualties in a guerilla war in a desert country... While in WW2 we suffered hundreds of thusands of casualties.

Even though China or north Korea are more of a threat and are far worse than Iraq(though china is improving) we would NEVER put real pressure on either country because to even attack north Korea, whos entire population is starving, including their military... to attack them would be political suicide because we would actually see casualty reports that were more than triple didgit. So no matter what any of those countires do, we will never do anything against them.

However, a country like Iraq, where Kim Jong makes sadam look like the easter bunny... we invade because they might have "WMD"(while korea admits to building them)...

My point basically is, "The countries we should attack, never will be, because to do so woulld jeapordize a politicians career should we actually start taking losses"

I was not using the pics as emotional appeals, they were ment to make a point... We dont like those sort of images and politicians will avoid them coming in at all costs. Even if it means abandoning some moral scrupples.

And I awill admit, I am no student of history. My knowledge of it goes from about the tme of Alexander the great, to the fall of constantinople, blanks... then picks up again during the enlightenment... blanks... civil war, franco-prussian war... blanks... WW1-WW2 then blacks out again until the fall of the berlin wall.

That does of course, not count supreme court decisons and a few scattered events that caught my nterest.

Little Kim might be building them.
Little Kim would love to have them.
But it isn't certain that he got them or even the ability to produce them.

Saddam had no friends in this world.
Kim, unfortunately, have China thus making an operation against him very risky indeed. Kim however is also restrained from anything to aggressive by China causing the situation to be very stable, unlike the highly instable Arabic world.
Kim, unlike Saddam, have a country so dirt poor that cannibalism seems to be a major protein source and there is absolutely no hope for improvement in the situation. Saddam would have Iraq's oil to rearm with the instant sanctions were lifted.

Little Kim is despite his hostility a minor menace to all except his own suffering subjects in the world's last Gulag.

Appeals to emotion are very productive esp at election time..remember this is about politics, not logic or reason.
