EDIT: Yeah and FF: Tactics rocks too.
Those are my nominations.

BTW, I have the free updated windows version of Xcom if anyone wants it.

How can one get it?

Space Empires IV, ff tactics, and a very old game called masters of magic or something along those lines (I don't play it anymore as I accidentally broke the CD some time ago :( )
"I want to mow down a bunch of motherfuckers with absurdly large weapons and relative impunity - preferably in and around a skyscraper. Then I want to fight a grim battle against the unlikely duo of the Terminator and Robocop. The last level should involve (but not be limited to) multiple robo-Hitlers and a gorillasaurus rex."--Uraniun235 on his ideal FPS game

I just got Silent Storm. I have to say, I haven't played a turn-based squad game this good for a long time. It feels like all the good things about Fallout & X-Com combined...

That and far, far too easy to exploit the weaknesses.

Literally getting Strikeback renders you invulnerable all but magic and arrows. and neither at any point presented enough problem for me to care.

It's a fun game, and ball to trade stuff, but I liked FFT's skill system better...sure I can create a minigod, but no one particular skill gave me that superior an advantage.

For 'management' style hybrids, the Civilizations series. (I like Call to Power best, haven't really sat down with Civ 3 yet)
I'd recommend you get it. It includes the best aspects of the Call to Power games, and drops the annoying factors that hurt them, with the best of the real Civilization line.
I do have it, just haven't sat down and played it seriously yet
