Gay marriage now legal in....

Post by Shadow WarChief »

...San Francisco.

Just caught this on the local news. here's a link

Note: This is just in San Francisco. It's still not legal in the rest of California, though from what my local news is saying, it looks like Sacramento is going to follow suit.

You'd think California, of all states, would have legalized gay marriage by now.
Don't hate; appreciate!

Better late than never. All that matters is that it's legal now, right? Hopefully other states will follow suit.

You know, you could have included the San Fransisco in the title and people would have still clicked on the link.

Probably. But where's the drama in that? Where's the surprise in finding out what new part of the US shall have Pat Robertson frothing at the mouth?

Fuck it. Gay guys should marry gay chicks, regardless of state, that way we queers get the benefits of marriage, but can still be gay and piss of the conservatives. Noone says theyd have to live together, it'd just be a formal, business arrangement. What are the conservatives gonna do? Ask if you're queer before giving you the marriage license? Ahahaha like that'd work.

This isn't a legalization of gay marriage. The California Constitution clearly states that marriage can only occur between a man and a woman.

What this [/i]is[/i] is a grassroots effort to bring the gay marriage issue into the spotlight and test it in the California state courts, with an eventual push towards bringing the issue to the US Supreme Court.

Oh, it's a wonderful start. But as Winston Wolf said, "Let's not start sucking each others dicks quite yet".

We're not as liberal as everybody thinks...well, maybe we are...but I doubt outside of San Francisco, there is that much statewide support for gay marriage. In 2000, voters passed Prop 22 that states marriage is between a man and a woman.

California is the fucking twilight zone. It's the home of some of the most socially progressive movements out there, but it's also the home of most of the country's creationist literature publishers.

We have the largest population of any state in the US, what did you expect? The larger population centers (San Francisco Bay Area and LA area) tend to be progressive, while the real redneck towns (yes, we have them) are conservative. The Eastern parts of California with the exception of Lake Tahoe aren't all that different from Nevada (read: bunch of rednecks).

Keep in mind California is bigger than a lot of countries (including yours). It would be more surprising if it didn't have a diversity of opinion on....well, everything. Of course San Francisco and Los Angeles are weird towns by any measure, so the state does get an oddball reputation. What they really need is a place like Salt Lake City to sorta counterbalance San Francisco, to really fuck the place up.

Last time I checked, Canada was roughly the same size as the continental US.

Considering that the entire conversation has to do with the people in California, not the size of it, maybe you should consider that before making thinly veiled remarks about the stupidity of Americans.

I wonder where most of those folks live? Its got to be the Sierra foothills or the Central Valley.

Anyway, the news of the gay marriage stuff is all over the radio and tv. Which is too be expected since SF in only an hour away. I say good for them, who cares if gay people get married. Does'nt hurt me.

Actually, geographical size is an important factor. Geographical isolation facilitates large cultural differences, hence the wide disparity in Canadian local cultures from coast to coast. It's not just a matter of adding up population counts.

And I believe Marina is an American.

Usually true, but anyone whose ever driven through California can tell you that once you get away from the population centers, its like stepping into a different world. Have you ever been to the Bakersfield or Fresno areas?
And I believe Marina is an American.
If she is then I apologize, I've been hearing too many "Americans suck!" lately from foreigners that I get a little ticked about the subject.

Right here pal! You don't get much more redneck in California than Bakersfield. And yes, we are in the Central Valley. It's mainly the result of the oil, and ag industy, which tend to make us a lot more akin to Texas than say San Fran. The most liberal minded Bakersfield Democrat would probably be labeled a Right Wing Conservative in San Francisco.

Just a travel advisory to anyone passing though...take off that Kucinich sicker, pump up the Alan Jackson, and keep your incest jokes to yourself :D .
